Job Description:
The Russ College of Engineering & Technology’s Institute for Sustainable Energy and the Environment ( ISEE ) at Ohio University invites applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar position focused on developing ultra-lightweight and ultra-conductive carbon-metal composites. The selected candidate will contribute to multidisciplinary research advancing next-generation metal-based composite materials for transportation and energy transmission applications. Key responsibilities include the design, fabrication, and characterization of novel composites with enhanced mechanical, electrical, and physical properties. This position offers a unique opportunity to engage in collaborative research with leading industry partners and nationally recognized research institutions, providing hands-on experience with advanced manufacturing techniques and exposure to real-world engineering challenges. The position is ideal for candidates seeking to bridge fundamental research with applied innovation in a highly collaborative environment.
Duties will include but are not limited to:
+ Metal Composite Fabrication: Lead the development and fabrication of metal-based composites, including formulation design with varying carbon content and execution of solid-phase hot extrusion trials. Responsibilities include optimizing process parameters to improve composite quality and performance. The role also involves coordination with industrial collaborators and federal research institutions for material supply and equipment access. Strict adherence to safety protocols, particularly in the handling of nanomaterials, is essential.
+ Materials Characterization: Evaluate the electrical properties, mechanical performance, and microstructural features of metal composites to support materials development and process optimization. This will include: (1) utilizing optical microscopy and SEM / EBSD to assess grain morphology, porosity, and the dispersion and alignment of carbon reinforcements within the metal matrix; (2) measuring electrical properties such as AC/DC conductivity and temperature coefficient of resistivity in accordance with ASTM standards; (3) conducting mechanical performance testing to determine tensile, impact, and flexural properties; and (4) evaluating density and thermal conductivity improvements. Data generated from these analyses will guide iterative refinement of composite formulations and processing parameters to achieve target performance metrics.
+ Dissemination of Research Findings: Prepare manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals and present findings at national conferences. Contribute to proposal development and sponsor reporting to support future funding opportunities related to carbon materials research
+ Laboratory Oversight and Collaboration: Oversee day-to-day operations of the research lab related to metal composite development, including student mentoring, equipment maintenance, and supply inventory. Collaborate with internal and external partners to advance the goals of the research projects.
This position will also supervise student workers in a research lab setting.
Minimum Qualifications:
Doctoral degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field by start date of appointment.
At least one year of related experience.
Planning Unit: Russ College of Engineering & Technology
Department: Institute for Sustainable Energy and the Environment
