    Salary Range: $25.00 to $31.25 per hour

     

    The University of St. Thomas has provided a salary range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The specific salary offered will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information.

    JOB SUMMARY

    The Ice Technician is responsible for the preparation, maintenance, and quality control of multiple ice sheets in the Lee and Penny Anderson Arena, including the Tommie Ice Plex (auxiliary hockey rink). This role ensures optimal ice conditions that meet or exceed NCAA and sport specific performance standards. The ideal candidate is experienced in ice resurfacing, equipment maintenance, ice plant monitoring and maintenance, ice making and removal operations, dasher board installation-removal-maintenance, and ice resurfacing machine operation and maintenance, with a strong understanding of the demands of high-performance environments. The position plays a key role in the safe, clean, and welcoming environment of the facility for all patrons and staff while upholding high customer service standards and pursuing operational excellence.

     

    This position requires a mix of creativity, analytical thinking, and effective communication to succeed in a fast-paced environment. It offers a fantastic opportunity to combine a passion for sports, event execution, and personnel/facility management with skills in ice rink operations, managing/training staff, customer service, and facility operations. The Ice Technician will work with the Operations Manager and Supervisor to develop facility policies, staff scheduling plans, provide feedback on facility use schedules (which includes intercollegiate athletics, youth ice hockey, public skating, various external events, etc.), develop and execute equipment maintenance schedules, and play a key role with the overall operating plan of the Lee and Penny Anderson Arena.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    Ice Maintenance, Ice Preparation, and Quality Control:

    + Prepare and maintain competition quality ice surfaces for practices, games, and special events.

    + Operate and maintain ice resurfacing equipment before, during, and after events.

    + Conduct regular ice quality control and temperature checks; adjust and refine refrigeration system functionality as needed.

    + Maintain consistent ice hardness, temperature, and surface smoothness for optimal performance during athletic competitions.

    + Participate in the installation/removal of ice surfaces ensuring appropriate rink markings, logos, and goal crease areas according to NCAA requirements.

    Facility and Equipment Maintenance:

    + Conduct daily checks and preventative maintenance on all ice-related machinery and support equipment including ice resurfacing machines, ice edgers, dasher boards, and rink glass.

    + Maintain tools, storage areas, dasher boards, glass, goal nets, safety nets, and other rink components in a safe and functional condition at all times.

    + Regularly inspect ice plant and compressor room to ensure overall safe operating conditions. Document and report issues to arena management as necessary.

    + Document maintenance tasks and ice data using computer systems and logbooks.

    + Complete work orders and facility maintenance projects as assigned.

    + Participate in the development of maintenance schedules and provide feedback on suggested equipment needs and purchases.

    + Contribute to short/long term maintenance tracking and initiatives, inspections, repairs, inventory control, and necessary facility equipment upgrades.

    + Communicate with athletic department arena staff, university staff, and third-party vendors on facility equipment needs, supply orders, and maintenance projects.

    Event Support:

    + Coordinate with event staff, coaches, officials, and facility management to ensure ice readiness per NCAA Division I standards.

    + Attend and provide support at various sporting/miscellaneous events as determined by event execution requirements and overall event schedule.

    + Assist with execution of events, special functions, and athletic competitions in areas including the main arena, premium club spaces and Tommie Ice Plex

    + Assist with facility conversions and special event set-ups and tear downs as needed. Perform pre/post event or conversion inspections.

    Leadership, Training, and Customer Relations:

    + Hire/supervise/manage part-time staff by assisting with the development of training requirements, safety expectations, and customer service initiatives for the arena.

    + Work closely with arena management staff to identify/implement facility policies/procedures.

    + Participate in the development of long/short-term facility enhancement objectives.

    + Ability to provide outstanding customer service and collaborate with coworkers, guests, supervisors, and vendors in a professional manner.

    + Participate in ongoing technical, safety, and operational training programs as required to stay current with industry standards.

    Compliance, Financial, and Risk Management:

    + Ensure adherence to legal, regulatory, and NCAA requirements.

    + Develop, support, and enforce health, safety, and security protocols – including safe operation of machinery and proper ice care procedures.

    + Ensure compliance with university regulations, policies, and NCAA compliance.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    Minimum Qualifications

    + Bachelor’s degree, preferably in sports management, recreation management, facility management, or a related field

    + Three to five years of related experience in ice maintenance operations

    + Proficiency with ice resurfacing equipment and rink refrigeration systems

    + Knowledge of NCAA and/or professional ice surface standards

    + Experience with facility management and/or ice rink operations (ideally within an intercollegiate athletics hockey and/or multipurpose facility)

     

    An equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills have been acquired may be substituted.
