Nature of Work
Delivers, repairs, and performs routine maintenance of commercial and residential waste containers.
Environmental Factors
Position functions one-hundred (100) percent outside at Joint Utilities yard and possibly customer residences and/or businesses with exposure to all types of weather conditions, fumes, dust, dirt, noise, and odors. Use of safety shoes, glasses and other equipment is required.
Physical Factors
Heavy physical work involving frequent bending, kneeling, and stooping; lifting and carrying up to seventy (70) pounds at shoulder height; pushing trash containers weighing up to five-hundred (500) pounds; visual acuity and auditory/communication abilities sufficient to perform essential functions.
Work Situation Factors
Position involves competing demands, performing multiple tasks, working to deadlines, occasional work beyond normal business hours, and responding to customer issues. May also involve working extended hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays. Regular attendance is an essential function of this job to ensure continuity of services. Position is subject to drug testing in accordance with applicable State and Federal regulations and City of Las Cruces policies.

Duties and Responsibilities
+ Assembles, delivers, removes, repairs, and paints commercial and residential waste containers for delivery to new or existing sites.
+ Repairs and replaces damaged containers according to established schedule using ¾ ton utility and forklift to load and unload commercial or residential containers.
+ Performs routine repairs and refurbishing of commercial and residential solid waste containers, both in the field and shop, using standard hand tools, paint equipment, and welding equipment.
+ Repairs damaged lids, hooks, and wheels; paints containers; performs minor welding repairs on metal containers.
+ Uses pressure washer to clean containers and vehicles as needed for repairs or refurbishing.
+ Performs minor maintenance and lube of equipment.
+ Assists other section staff as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
No minimum educational requirement. One (1) year as a laborer, equipment maintenance person, construction helper, or related experience. At least six (6) months experience performing minor welding and operating a forklift is preferred. A combination of education, experience, and training may be applied in accordance with City of Las Cruces policy.
Licenses/Certification(s)
Valid driver’s license is required. If applicable, position requires an acceptable driving record in accordance with City of Las Cruces policies.

Knowledge of: principles, practices, techniques, activities, rules, and regulations related to the operations and functions of the position and services provided; Vehicle preventive maintenance, techniques of general equipment repair, and welding methods, current principles of record keeping and records management; customer service, and problem resolution techniques; occupational and environmental safety and health hazards, and safety practices; safe and effective use and maintenance of related tools, materials, and equipment; current methods and standards for preparing effective business correspondence; correct English usage, grammar, composition, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary; business and personal computers and related software applications; City organization, operations, policies, and procedures to effectively perform the required functions and duties of the position.
Ability to: safely using and maintaining high pressure washer, paint sprayer, rollers, brushes, hand tools, impact wrench, and other job-related equipment and tools, perform a variety of duties and responsibilities and assess and prioritize multiple tasks, projects, and demands to meet deadlines; ensure appropriate levels of customer service to achieve expectations and meet objectives; read, understand, and assure compliance with a variety of policies, procedures, rules, standards, and regulations governing related activities and functions; collect applicable information and maintain accurate and timely records; maintain confidentiality of information and data; communicate effectively orally and in writing and use interpersonal skills to sufficiently exchange or convey information and receive work direction; establish and maintain effective and appropriate working relationships with employees, other agencies, and the public; safely and effectively operate relevant tools, equipment, and motorized vehicles; navigate across even and uneven surfaces; timely and accurately enter data and update records using various mediums and formats; take initiative and exercise sound independent judgment within established procedural guidelines and carry out primary responsibilities in accordance with all governing regulations, statutes, and procedures to ensure achievement of goals and objectives.
