Position Summary: Provides high quality care to patients in accordance with the Guthrie Clinic and the Endoscopy Center standards of care and practice, and under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. Maintains collaborative relationships with nursing staff, physicians and fellow ancillary staff to provide this care. Assists in providing care to patients of all age groups in the Hospital endoscopy unit and age 18 or older in the Endoscopy Center. Cleans and maintains endoscopes and equipment; provides technical assistance to the physician during diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopies; assists with orientation of staff. Maintains an appropriate level of knowledge and clinical skill through continuing education, in‐services and self‐study activities. Essential Functions: At the direction of and monitoring by the RN, assists nursing staff in patient care by: physically prepares the patient for the procedure (may assist with changing clothes); lifts, turns and positions patients; closely observes confused patients; assists patient to the bathroom, to wheelchairs and to transfer; obtains vital signs; provides beverages/crackers to patients; may obtain patient finger stick blood glucose via glucometer; documents and completes forms and records completely and concisely; discontinues IV catheters in accordance with Endoscopy Center standards. Basic understanding of the importance of hand washing to prevent disease transmission and infection. Communicates abnormal observations of patient status to RN or physician. Independently cares for and maintains endoscopes: understands basic anatomy of all endoscopes used; utilizes and maintains Endoscopy equipment in accordance with manufacturers’ recommendations and department guidelines; understands rationale for and utilizes appropriate gross cleaning, high level disinfection and sterilization of equipment; maintains equipment via routine and regular examination of endoscopes, troubleshooting, operating and submitting for repair as needed; maintains accurate and complete records of equipment utilized during Endoscopy procedures. Recognizes an emergency situation and initiates proper action. Supports the philosophy and objectives of the Endoscopy Center. Works collaboratively with and at the direction of a Registered Nurse in giving patient care. Under the direct supervision of the physician, after proper education and training, may assist the physician with various procedures including manipulation of the following as directed: polypectomy snares, biopsy forceps and other accessory equipment to, e.g., snare polyps and/or foreign objects, obtain biopsies. Other Duties: Assists in orientation of new staff. Participates in the teaching and supervision of students or other qualified observers. Transports patients, specimens, IV pumps, picks up medications from pharmacy. Assists physicians and nurses with Endoscopy procedures, e.g., upper Endoscopy, colonoscopy, manometry, ERCP, etc., with competency based on knowledge of endoscopes and accessories; of potential complications and appropriate responses; of unit‐ and industry‐specific training endoscopic procedures. Attends staff meetings at least 70%. Demonstrates flexibility in work assignments to facilitate efficiency and flow of patient care. Willingness to work either in Endoscopy Clinic or hospital Suite. Demonstrates initiative in completing tasks by utilizing time between procedures and/or endoscope care to stock supplies; clean and straighten; disinfect and make up clean stretchers; empty laundry bags; help other Endoscopy staff with patient care as needed. Demonstrates willingness to accept non‐routine work assignments. Demonstrates positive interpersonal interactions with co‐workers, physicians, and other members of health center staff. Avoids gossip and back‐biting, and treats others with respect. Demonstrates respect, consideration and a non‐judgmental attitude for patients. Maintains patient confidentiality. Prioritizes tasks, so that patient is always main focus. Excellent phone skills, using the Guthrie Health System phone guidelines. Notifies Lead or Nurse Manager of concerns related to patients, staff or other departments.
Pay Range $19.48-$30.36/hr DOE
