    _The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job's compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations._

    Responsibilities:

    GENERAL PURPOSE

    This position has two distinct sets of responsibilities: 1) Staff training and post-approval monitoring, and 2) UCAR Office support for management and review of protocols and support of the Committee as back up to UCAR Staff.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    UCAR Protocol Processes – adding staff, protocol review

    + Researches, reviews and manages all requests to add staff to protocol. Before adding staff to protocol, gathers all necessary information and analyzes several training elements, such as but not limited to: which training is required based on the staff member’s previous work with animal subjects, what training has he/she already had, does previous training meet current training requirements, and what additional training may be needed before the staff member can be added.

    + Follows up with requesting department or Principal Investigator (PI), confirms additions, or communicates additional training needs. Follows up to ensure the staff member attended/completed training and processes the addition, if applicable.

    + For all animal users: schedules appropriate training for all animal users currently on or who will be added to protocol. Tracks training completion and communicates with staff and PI’s about the status of training and future training offered.

    Staff Training

    + In consultation with the Senior Research and Training Coordinator: The Employee will develop, implement, and integrate hands-on workshops, on-line courses, presentations and website materials for staff training on Animal Use protocol, techniques, policies, regulations and documentation requirements. Makes recommendations to the Research and Training Coordinator and provides input regarding content design and delivery methods for training.

    + As needed, assists Research and Training Coordinator to present the training sessions. In collaboration with the Division of Comparative Medicine and the Research and Training Coordinator, will assist in the development of American Association Laboratory Animal Science Certification courses.

    UCAR and Animal Resources Website maintenance

    + Updates websites and ensures all User Training Manuals are posted and available for users on the website.

    + Ensures orientation, training schedules, regulations and policies are up to date and posted on the website(s).

     

    Processes submitted protocols, assign protocol reviews, and tracks the review process as a backup to UCAR staff.

     

    + Reviews protocols, especially from new investigators, to determine the need for training.

    + Provides technical assistance and training for PIs and their staff who use animals in research.

    + Develops and monitors standard operating procedures (SOPs) for animal use in the research laboratory and in the animal resource.

    + Assists with the development and implementation of institutional policies and procedures as they relate to current Animal Welfare Act (AWA) regulations and Public Health Service (PHS) policy.

    + Conducts monthly quality assurance audits in the research laboratories and animal resource to ensure compliance with SOPs.

    Conduct post-approval compliance monitoring

    + Participates in New York State and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) inspections and Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care (AAALAC) site visits

    + Schedules semiannual inspections, classifies and tracks deficiencies and verifies their correction.

    + Compiles and analyzes deficiencies obtained from semiannual inspections and lab inspections in order to classify them according to type and severity. Documents them in the inspection database.

    + Prepares reports for the UCAR program review emphasizing training and program activities with an evaluation of patterns of trends in noncompliance.

    + Conducts weekly laboratory visits, quality assurance, and protocol audits. Inspects the laboratory and interviews lab staff to determine whether their actual laboratory practices are in line with their approved protocols. Recommends further training or other practices to improve compliance.

    + Conducts investigations of reported non-compliance or animal welfare concerns and reports findings to the Research and Training Coordinator who will consult with the Committee to determine what further action should be taken.

    + Provides UCAR requested monitoring of laboratories that have been non-compliant to assist them in maintaining compliance.

    + Daily/weekly management of compliance databases and metrics related to protocol monitoring.

    + Serves on the UCAR as a voting member.

    Assist in other committee functions

    + Prepares and circulates material for monthly and semiannual UCAR meetings.

    + Performs all essential office functions in the absence of other office staff.

    + Other projects and duties as assigned. Reviews UR institutional policies and procedures as they relate to current AWA regulation to ensure compliance with the most current version of the regulations and to determine how UR compares to other similar institutions.

    MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

    + Bachelor’s degree in a related field of science, e.g., Animal Science, Veterinarian Sciences, Biological Sciences, Zoology, etc. Required

    + Three years of compliance, coding, and consulting experience or equivalent combination of education and experience Required

    + Experience in biomedical research facility and management of research animals

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

    + Prior experience working with Institutional Animal Care and Use Committees, is helpful.

    + General proficiency in using computers for office functions, including word processing, spreadsheets, email, database and web site maintenance. Required

    + Able to work independently with minimal supervision as well as with a team of people. Required

    + Strong analytical skills and technical skills working with different systems and databases. Required

    + Strong organizational skills and attention to detail. Required

    + Strong customer service, presentation, and interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate in a positive and professional manner, including written communication. Required

    LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

    + Licensed Veterinary Technician

    + Certified Professional IACUC Administrator (CPIA) certification or willingness to obtain certification within 5 years. Required

    + AALAS certification at least at the level of Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician or willing to obtain within 3 year (ALAT). Required
