With more than 320 acres of gardens and natural areas in the heart of Seattle, the UW Botanic Gardens is home to internationally significant plant collections, award-winning restoration ecology and conservation programs, and popular public programs serving youth, adults, and professionals. UW Botanic Gardens has two sites: the Washington Park Arboretum and the Center for Urban Horticulture.

     

    UW Botanic Gardens supports the City of Seattle’s Trees for Neighborhoods program. Each fall. Trees for Neighborhoods helps hundreds of residents plant 1,000+ trees in their yards and along the streets.

     

    **Job description:** Under the direction of UW Botanic Gardens Adult Education Supervisor and Adult Education Program Coordinator, and in close coordination with City of Seattle Program Manager, plan and carry out tree delivery to households across Seattle. All trees will be delivered with bagged mulch and watering bags. Most work will occur at the Center for Urban Horticulture (3501 NE 41st St., Seattle), and driving a university vehicle throughout the city of Seattle.

    **Dates:** Early September – Late November

     

    Approximately 10 hours/week in September; approximately 40 hours/week October to mid-November

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES** **Essential tasks:

    + Support execution of weekend Tree Planting and Care workshops, including setting up seating and checking in program participants.

    + Load, unload, and transport watering bags and other program supplies between City of Seattle and UW facilities.

    + Unload deliveries of trees from nursery trucks.

    + Complete trainings related to program content, driver safety, and workplace health and safety.

    + Prepare tree supplies to be distributed to participants, including filling bags of woodchip mulch, affixing instructional stickers to tree pots, and attaching instructional cards to water bags.

    + Manage temporary nursery space, watering trees when needed and setting up and securing temporary fencing for rabbit protection around trees at all times.

    + Deliver 1,300 trees and supplies to residences throughout Seattle. Includes route planning, loading and unloading trees and supplies with careful attention to detail. **MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS**

    + High school graduation or equivalent and two years of full-time clerical experience or equivalent education/experience. **DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS**

    + Strong interpersonal and verbal skills.

    + Strong attention to detail.

    + Ability to bend, squat, and lift up to 30 pounds frequently.

    + Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

    + Valid driver’s license (held for at least two years) and willingness to drive a University of Washington vehicle throughout Seattle. A background check is required for all new UW drivers.

    + Knowledge of and experience with tree planting and care in a landscape setting.

    + Experience communicating with the public and/or providing excellent customer service.
