    Responsibilities:

    GENERAL SUMMARY

    The River Campus Libraries (RCL) Department of Rare Books, Special Collections, and Preservation (RBSCP) seeks a Processing Assistant to provide support for detailed-oriented work that supports the processing, preservation, and accessibility of archival collections. With a high degree of accountability and authority to work independently and collaboratively, this temporary position is primarily responsible for assisting in organizing, processing, and describing archival collections. There may be an extension of the position, dependent on performance and departmental needs.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    Arrangement and series determination

    + Separate physical material into series arrangement determined in conjunction with RBSCP Staff

    Processing historical materials

    + Arrange historical materials and bound volumes in subseries, files, and with logical internal organization

    Processing modern and visual materials

    + Respecting original order where possible, arrange modern archives, including visual and audiovisual materials

    Discovery

    + Create finding aids in ArchivesSpace in compliance with archival metadata standards such as DACS and EAD

    Professional Development

    + Maintain currency with library functions, resources, practices, and procedures

    + Participate in and contribute toward RBSCP and RCL meetings and events.

    + Maintain professional collaborations with RCL colleagues and other campus constituencies.

    MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

    + Associate’s degree Required

    + Bachelor’s degree Preferred

    + 3 years’ work experience Required

    + Or equivalent combination of education and experience Required

    + Experience navigating and manipulating large spreadsheets while ensuring the integrity of all data points Required

    + Experience handling historic or fragile materials Required

    + Experience with data entry and editing Required

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

    + Knowledge of archival arrangement, processes, and construction of inherited hierarchies Required

    + Ability to take clear and organized notes to establish intellectual organization and description of material and concerned agents Required

    + Excellent physical and spatial organization Required

    + Excellent written and verbal communication skills Required

    + Commitment to inclusion, equity, reparative justice, diversity, and an understanding of how these values are expressed in archival representation and description Preferred

    + Knowledge of editing records and fields in ArchivesSpace, RBSCP’s enterprise system for representation and recordkeeping of archival materials Preferred

    + Driver’s license and access to individual transportation, for accessing off-site storage Preferred
