    The Eastern Piedmont Planning Group within the NCDOT Transportation Planning Division (TPD) is looking for a mid-level Civil Engineer that has prior experience with transportation planning and/or transportation planning organizations. Your primary purpose is to work with Metropolitan Planning Organization(s) and/ or Rural Planning Organization(s) (specific assignment will be made after hire) to create transportation plans to serve future travel needs.

     

    Your work will include travel forecasting, GIS spatial data analysis, travel demand modeling, traffic forecasting, deficiency analysis, environmental and Title VI screening, and making multimodal recommendations in development of transportation plans that serve as a guide for policies and development/ implementation.

     

    •You must have the ability to exhibit problem-solving capabilities, teamwork, leadership, consensus building, strong verbal and written communication, and establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.

    •You must be able to lift/carry materials for meetings, have a valid Driver’s License, and be able to drive alone.

    •Most of your work is completed in our downtown Raleigh offices with some travel, almost always scheduled in advance. Most travel will be either daytime or evening, but there could be some occasional overnight travel. Travel varies but is approximately 10% of time.

    Management Preferences:

    + Experience, training, or coursework in any of the following: transportation planning, project development, traffic forecasting, environmental engineering, or traffic engineering.

    + Experience or training in any of the following: data evaluation, traffic trends, or data projections.

    + Experience or training in computer applications and operations (Microsoft Office, GIS, Spatial mapping, TransCAD, etc).

    + Experience communicating information in written and oral format.

    + Experience communicating findings and recommendation to others.

    + Experience interacting with any of the following: state, federal, regional, or local governments or planning organizations.

    + Experience working on teams or group projects.

    Additional Expectations:

    The position must be knowledgeable of the organization and operation of NCDOT and the Transportation Planning Division.

     

    Applicants who have passed the FE exam, pursuing a PE, and/or have some coursework and/or experience in transportation planning are preferred.

     

    Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

    Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Necessary Special Qualification May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
