    Position Overview:

    The Motion Controls group at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is responsible for the design, operation and support of all movable beam instrumentation and diagnostics systems including undulator magnets, beam diagnostics and associated readout and feedback systems. The successful Motion Controls engineer will work under minimal supervision on a variety of interesting and challenging engineering tasks related to state-of-the-art and legacy electronics and hardware systems. The work can cover all phases of a system's lifetime: conceptualization, design, planning, implementation, and commissioning. The work involves collaborating with Associate Engineers and Technicians, other Engineers, Scientists and Safety Systems personnel within the Accelerator Directorate, and interacting with other SLAC departments, DOE labs, and the international accelerator community.

     

    Given the nature of this position, SLAC will require onsite work.

    Your Specific Responsibilities Include:

    + Assist in the development of state-of-the-art motion control and electronic instrumentation and data acquisition systems for particle accelerators.

    + Participate in studying the operational motion control and electronic instrumentation systems in legacy accelerators and recommend upgrades to the various electronics deployed in the field. Assist with implementing those upgrades once accepted.

    + Develop test stands, test, debug and validate integrated motion control and instrumentation systems, including digital designs, and high-speed communications.

    + Work collaboratively with scientists and engineers both from SLAC and from other institutions to provide recommendations, requirements, and specifications, and implement engineering solutions in your area of expertise.

    + Support preparation of new proposals; from the development of technical concepts to the preparation of budgets and schedules.

    + Adhere to the SLAC¿s EH&S policies and maintain all required related training up to date.

    Required Qualifications:

    + Bachelor¿s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, or related field with focus on mechatronics and two years of relevant experience in the following areas:

    + Industrial motion control systems development. Experience must include: requirements definition, kinematic modeling, architecture design, components selection, motion controller programming, system testing and deployment.

    + Being a primary contributor in complex technical projects

    + Defining instrumentation test plans

    + Working knowledge of C/C++ and Python programming

    + Familiar with Unix environment

    + Understanding of control systems theory

    + Ability to work independently on complex motion control design tasks

    Preferred qualifications:

    + Master¿s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, or related field with focus on mechatronics

    + Experience drafting and reading electrical schematics

    + Experience reading mechanical drawings

    + Hands-on experience with Aerotech, Omron, and/or Beckhoff motor controllers

    + Experience with metrology (CMM, interferometry)

    + Experience with kinematic and dynamic simulations using Matlab Simulink or similar software

    + Experience mentoring junior engineers

    + Experience with particle detectors, large electric, permanent and/or superconducting magnetic assemblies, and other particle accelerator instrumentation systems

    + Working knowledge of EPICS software framework

    + Hands-on field experience integrating and troubleshooting digital controllers and instrumentation in a scientific environment

    _The expected pay range for this position is $116,000 to $170,000 per annum_ _. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs._
