    Position Summary

    The University of Utah College of Nursing seeks an established, visionary nurse scientist to become the holder of the L. S. Skaggs Presidential Endowed Chair in Acute and Critical Care Nursing (est. 2025). The Chair is supported by an endowment honoring Leornard Samuel “Sam” Skaggs, Jr., entrepreneur and philanthropist. The L. S. Skaggs Presidential Chair in Nursing will lead a robust, funded program of research in acute and critical care nursing, dedicating the majority of their time to making scientific discoveries, advancing evidence-based practices, securing external funding, and contributing to the scientific community through high-impact publications and interdisciplinary collaboration.

     

    Principal Functions and Responsibilities

     

    The L. S. Skaggs Presidential Chair in Nursing will execute a programmatic vision to strengthen the College and University of Utah Health Sciences’ national and international presence and impact in acute and critical care research, practice, and education. Key responsibilities will include leading innovative research and scholarly activities; mentoring students, fellows and junior faculty; developing and teaching curriculum in the PhD, Doctor of Nursing Practice, and/or baccalaureate programs as aligns with the candidate’s program of research and experience; engaging in professional service; and providing and/or consulting about acute and critical care. Collaborating with other leaders, the holder of the L. S. Skaggs Presidential Chair in Nursing will advocate for services and policy that benefit acute and critically ill patients and their families. The Chair will have opportunities to thrive in a collegial atmosphere that promotes cross-disciplinary collaboration; fosters engagement with faculty and premier institutes and centers such as the Clinical & Translational Science Institute, Nora Eccles Harrison Cardiovascular Research & Training Institute, Huntsman Cancer Institute, Center for Genomic Medicine, Utah Data Coordinating Center, Scientific Computer and Imaging Institute, and Center for Health Ethics, Arts, and Humanities; and drives discovery with meaningful societal impact. College of Nursing faculty are expected to live in Utah.

     

    Criteria

     

    We seek a candidate who is a nationally recognized leader in acute and critical care, and whose accomplishments reflect excellence in acute and critical care research, scholarship, teaching, and clinical practice. Candidates must have earned a PhD degree in nursing or a related field from an accredited College or School and hold a current Registered Nurse (RN) or Advanced Practice Registered Nurse ( APRN ) license or be eligible to obtain such. The ideal candidate will have a sustained record of externally funded research and evidence of high impact publications and presentations that pertain to acute and critical care nursing.

     

    Appointment

     

    The L. S. Skaggs Presidential Chair in Nursing is an administrative appointment, made by the Dean of the College of Nursing in accordance with University guidelines. The individual will maintain a tenure-line faculty position while in this role. Academic rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications. A competitive start-up package is available to support the Chair’s research and academic success.

    The College of Nursing has 10 additional Chairs, and is home to the Family Caregiving Collaborative, Gerontology Interdisciplinary Program, College of Nursing Simulation Center, Center of Excellence for Exposure Health Informatics ( CEEHI ), Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence, Health Resources and Services Administration ( HRSA )-funded Advanced Nursing Education Workforce ( ANEW ) program, and HRSA -funded Nurse Education, Practice, Quality & Retention ( NEPQR ) program. In 2017, the College of Nursing was the first recipient of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing ( AACN ) New Era for Academic Nursing Award. The College also received the AACN Exemplary Academic-Practice Partnership Award in 2018. In collaboration with University of Utah Health (U Health), the college works to improve individual, family, and community health and quality of life.
