Responsibilities:
GENERAL PURPOSE
Exercising some independent judgment and following the guidance of laboratory management, this individual is responsible for providing research support for URMC IDD investigators for investigator-led studies This individual is trained in methods for tissue and bacterial cultures, RT-PCR, neutralization and ELISA serologic assays and antigen preparation. This individual is able to maintain equipment, store and organize laboratory specimens, and assist in protocol development.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
+ Plans, manages, performs and processes data generated by moderately complex laboratory experiments which include PCR, ELISA, Western blot and biochemical assays.
+ Utilizes laboratory equipment including centrifuges, incubators, tissue culture hoods, automated plate washers, and thermocyclers.
+ Tissue and viral culture including maintaining various cells lines, at times simultaneously, growth of respiratory viruses, Preparation and sterilization of buffers and reagents including tissue culture media, phosphate-buffered-saline, and various assay medias.
+ Process primary specimens from surveillance studies and clinical trials including human blood samples, sputum samples, nasopharyngeal oropharyngeal in viral transport media, saliva sample.
+ Run controls as applicable for assays run, including BioMerieux Respiratory and Pneumonia Panels.
+ Maintain hoods, centrifuges, and other laboratory equipment as needed.
+ Maintain laboratory supplies used by all technicians.
+ Inform the laboratory supervisor of supply shortages.
+ Attend appropriate meetings, seminars and lectures regarding clinical research topics.
+ Obtain and maintain HSPP, GCP, GCLP, and IATA certifications.
+ Review study related documents including protocols, laboratory processing manuals, Manuals of procedures (mops).

MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
+ High School diploma or GED and 1 year experience performing basic sampling, monitoring or research activities, compiling and collecting data and preparing reports required.
+ Associate's degree in Health Science, Biology, Chemistry, or other science related field of study preferred.
+ Or equivalent combination of education and experience. Required
+ 1 year of specialized experience in related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Required
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
+ Knowledge of OSHA safety requirements and scientific methods required
