    The Sisterhood Initiative (SI) at the University of Washington provides holistic support to undergraduate students, with a particular focus on students who identify as women of color, empowering them to show up authentically in all aspects of their academic, professional, and personal lives. Housed in the College of Education and building on the success of the Brotherhood Initiative, the SI works collaboratively with campus partners and is guided by a dedicated steering committee. The SI's strength lies in its cohort model. Each member self-selects to intentionally support and be supported by the other students and SI staff. The primary goals are to:

     

    + Increase enrollment, retention, and graduation rates for students from underserved backgrounds, with a particular focus on addressing disparities faced by women of color at UW through a holistic cohort model.

    + Contribute to the understanding of the experiences of students from underserved backgrounds, with a particular focus on the experiences of women of color undergraduates at predominantly white institutions.

    + Actively engage students in projects/activities that enhance the experience of future undergraduate students.The SI is committed to ensuring equal opportunity in all its programs and activities, and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, age, marital status, disability, veteran status, or any other protected status. Reporting to the Assistant Director, the counseling services coordinator will provide direct support to SI Sophomore students and manage instruction, and academic advising for the sophomore cohort. **DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES** Academic Support and Student Development

    + Serve as academic support specialist and advocate for SI Sophomore students

    + Work closely with EOP advisors to ensure that students are academically on-track, and to provide additional support when needed

    + Provide referrals to resources on campus and within the community

    + Work with SI staff to track student academic progress each quarter

    + Work with SI staff to advise and prepare students for engagement in experiential learning, internships on and off campus, service learning, study abroad, and other academic opportunities

    + Promote campus and community events, and resources of interestFreshman & Sophomore Seminar Course Instruction

    + Work with SI staff on a year-long curriculum for Freshman & Sophomore students and help update and manage Canvas and develop content for workshop style seminars.

    + Serve as co-instructor of record for academic success courses such as EDUC 255 and EDUC 355 for entire academic year.

    + This course(s) promotes academic success by facilitating students’ engagement in their own learning. Specifically, the purpose of these courses is to:1) Ensure that students are better able to understand basic concepts of qualitative analysis2) Gain experience in interviewing and creating needs assessments3) Increase awareness regarding their own identities as well as the various issues impacting Black indigenous Women of Color (BIWOC) undergraduates at the University of Washington and gain experience in public speaking and presenting.

    + Teaching this course is a part of this position’s regular duties, does not authorize additional compensation, does not require nor confer a faculty title, and is subject to UWHR policies (e.g., student complaint resolution).- Grading each week for the Freshman & Sophomore cohort seminar class.- Manage syllabus updates and evaluation of the course **MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS**

    + Bachelor’s Degree in education or a related field and 3+ years of experience in education and course instruction/curriculum development. **Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration** **ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS**

    + A demonstrated awareness and understanding of concerns and issues experienced by underrepresented and marginalized populations.

    + Direct experience working with students in an educational setting.

    + Demonstrated ability to develop instructional content that supports clarity and/or exploration of major and career development.

    + Excellent communication skills and ability to prioritize and reprioritize multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.

    + Informed judgment and maintenance of a high level of confidentiality.

    + Demonstrated ability to take initiative and follow through on independent projects. **DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS**

    + Master’s Degree in education or a related field.

    + Familiarity with issues of educational equity, intersectionality, identity development, and college persistence.
