    Job Summary and Qualifications

     

    The Laboratory Supervisor provides general supervision and management of laboratory employees and serves as the lead medical technologist. They also oversee the department's quality assurance programs. . In this role:

     

    + Demonstrates leadership obligations related to Ethics and Compliance and the Code of Conduct. Reinforces the hospital's values and Code of Conduct. Sets an example and is in every respect a role model. Ensures that those on their team have sufficient information to comply with laws, regulations, and policies, as well as the resources to resolve ethical dilemmas.

    + Defines appropriate objectives and identifies potential problems in implementing goals. Plans, organizes, and effectively distributes work among supervised staff members. Ensures daily efficient operation of all sections of the clinical lab using professional knowledge and administrative guidelines and keeps deficiencies during on- site inspections to a minimum.

    + Hires, trains and develops talented people and builds team spirit. Verifies all lab employee licensure. Performs timely competency assessments and performance evaluations, including review of CAP proficiency testing, and demonstrates a genuine commitment to foster the growth and development of others through goal development and performance monitoring.

    + Creates an environment of mutual trust, respect and two-way communication. Provides timely and effective written and verbal communication to supervised staff, providing information needed to carry out their job responsibilities. Communicates openly and directly and welcomes openness and honesty from others. Monitors and addresses staff concerns and helps build a spirit of enthusiasm for the department's common objectives. Provides timely, positive and effective feedback, coaching, counseling and discipline to improve performance.

    + Demonstrates skill and accuracy in obtaining specimens. Incorporates age-specific factors in obtaining and assessing specimens. Uses effective patient relations (caring model) to minimize patient discomfort or anxiety and maximize patient satisfaction.

    + Performs routine and stat laboratory procedures in hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry, and immunoassay using established methods and techniques to ensure clinical accuracy and high service quality. Follows appropriate testing procedures, integrates and relates data generated by testing procedures, and assesses questionable or erratic results. Recognizes when information and labeling of specimen is incomplete or incorrect and follows up promptly as needed to expedite testing and analysis.

    + Ensures laboratory equipment is well maintained, including records of all maintenance, preventative and otherwise, to maximize clinical and service quality. Operates instruments properly according to manuals. Performs and documents preventive maintenance on instruments as directed by instruction manuals, laboratory policies and procedures, or supervisor instructions. Recognizes, evaluates, resolves and records (in log books) problems with equipment and/or procedures, makes simple field repairs where necessary, or uses alternative methods if possible.

    + Demonstrates an overall commitment to high clinical quality. Consults pathologist on technical matters such as interpretation of results and testing methodology. Reports to supervisor any errors or breach of techniques by lab or other hospital personnel, or other abnormal, erratic or unusual situations. Remains alert to possible sources of errors. Ensures writing is always legible, accurate, and complete. Offers suggestions to improve departmental efficiency, conserve supplies or improve patient care.

    + Ensures that all testing protocols are performed in accordance with defined policies, standards and regulations. Ensures lab files, patient records, work log sheets, preventative maintenance records, QC records and other documents are in compliance with established standards or law.

    + Establishes, maintains and monitors the Quality Control Program for all departments within the lab to ensure high quality analysis. Verifies that controls are included with patient samples. Ensures that immediate corrective measures are initiated if controls are out of acceptable limits. Prepares and provides interpretation for all quality control statistical data. Directs and assigns responsibility for the performance of accreditation proficiency test samples by all technical personnel. Ensures the performance of all calibrations, linearity and parallel testing of assays and/or equipment.

    + Develops, implements and enforces the laboratory infection control and safety program. Ensures compliance by all personnel to defined safety, fire, and infection control and disaster policies. Provides appropriate protective supplies and equipment for all employees.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    + A Bachelor's Degree in Science or a related field is Required for this role

    + Five years of experience as a Medical Technologist is Required

    + Two years of supervisory or management experience
