    Summary:

    The Psychiatric Registered Nurse III is a Charge, is an expert psychiatric nurse who understands and utilizes evidenced based theory, assessments and interventions to promote recovery in patients. The Charge Nurse works with the Nurse Manager to provide leadership and clinical supervision for all nursing staff. The Charge Nurse also assists with staffing, day to day operations, and evaluations of other employees. They assist in the development and maintenance of departmental directives that relate to nursing care. This nurse is able to competently adapt all assessments and interventions based on the uniqueness of the patient by taking into account developmental needs and chronological age. They also are experts at adapting learning styles for patients and staff/ families and caregivers. They are adept at negotiating conflict, collaborating with others and applying self-reflection to their practice. They are skilled in both administrative and leadership skills and have an understanding of quality improvement processes. Perform any duties and/or responsibilities assigned by Manager or Supervisor for which qualified.

    Responsibilities:

    + Individualizes the treatment plan according to the patient’s and family’s needs, taking into account health status, strengths, and barriers to treatment, and learning needs. Treatment plan is concise and representative of needs of the current hospitalization.

    + Evaluates the patient’s progress towards discharge through active utilization of the treatment plan. Treatment plan is updated within the time frame set per policy.

    + Alerts Nurse Manager/designee and treatment team of concerns/complications related to patient care.

    + Is acutely aware of milieu needs and provides leadership in planning and assisting with activities that provide a safe, therapeutic milieu.

    + Identifies patient risk factors and communicates recommendations to the psychiatrist for appropriate level of care.

    + Role models Collaborative Problem Solving. Provides formal and informal education regarding use of CPS and other non-threatening verbal communication styles.

    + Identifies alternatives to use of Restraints. Assists with educating and supporting staff and patients to ensure least restrictive environment, while still assuring safety.

    + Standard of Competency.

    + Assist in maintaining a work environment free from recognized hazards that create a risk of injury to employees, patients or visitors and that all accidents and incidents are reported by employees and properly investigated. When appropriate, assist with the return of all workers with work related injuries and illnesses to gainful employment.

    + Prioritizes daily workload in order to complete all assigned tasks.

    + Practices collaboratively, within the boundaries of professional licensure, in the delivery of patient care.

    + Facilitates communication about patient treatment needs between the nursing staff, treatment team and other health care providers.

    + Participates in the orientation of new nursing staff and works with existing nursing staff by providing education, support, direction and development of psychiatric nursing skills.

    + Is a role model for others regarding professional nursing work habits (punctual, minimal absenteeism, managing conflict, respectful communication, flexibility).

    Other Information:

    + BLS Required.

    + Must maintain RNC certification for Psychiatry. Willingness to gain additional education around Substance Abuse Disorder and Co-occurring Mental Health.

    + Experience working with Substance Abuse Population in an opioid treatment program, opioid health home or a primary care setting treating this disorder is preferred.

    + Required Associate's DegreeMinimum of 2 years substance use experience.
