Description of Work

This is an entry-level position which serves as an Assistant Resident Engineer in the Rockingham County Resident’s Office. The selected candidate will provide day-to-day management and contract administration of roadway and structure projects. Specific duties include but are not limited to performing project field inspections, preparing monthly/final pay estimates, creating, reviewing and evaluating supplement agreements and claims, ensuring compliance with NCDOT and external agencies, resolving constructability issues and serving as a NCDOT project representative for meetings with contractors, utilities, local officials, media and the general public. Must have the ability to communicate effectively and supervise lower-level technicians. Work is often performed independently requiring professional knowledge of complex and/or detailed technical procedures.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
Management prefers applicants with the following:
+ Experience in reading and interpreting highway construction plans and contracts
+ Experience in directing, assisting or training of sub-ordinate employees
+ Experience administering contracts
+ Knowledge of the principles and practices of Civil Engineering
+ Knowledge and understanding of general concepts, practices, and theories used in construction, construction inspection, and/or construction surveying
Additional Expectations:
Employee may be exposed to hazards including but not limited to high traffic volumes, heavy construction equipment, heights over water or traffic, extreme temperatures and adverse weather conditions. Employee must be able to lift 40-50 pounds, navigate uneven terrain and work at night and weekends if necessary. Must be able to acquire various certifications pertaining to job duties. Safety toe footwear is required for this position. Selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Qualification May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
