We are looking for a highly motivated and well-experienced individual to lead our team of excellent Facility Managers.Veterinary Resources supports the use of animal models of human biology in translational biomedical research and discovery. With animal research, the similarities and differences among species are leveraged to better understand, diagnose, prevent, and treat human disease. A collegial sharing of expertise between Veterinary Resources and other essential UMB departments and services (i.e., OAWA, IACUC, EHS, OHS) provides a safe, ethical, humane, and legal environment for the advancement of biomedical research. All employees are expected to work primarily physically within the State of Maryland.*/* */ /**/ /**/ *_Primary Duties_* * Manage, supervise, and guide the husbandry management team and animal care staff including oversight and participation in training, scheduling work assignments, coordinating and delegating tasks, monitoring and evaluating performance to promote maximum staff member participation, animal care program benefit and effectiveness as well as overall functional productivity. * Manage the development and execution of internal animal-based research studies as it relates to animal care and use. * Oversee the husbandry and animal care facility operations and develop approaches and revises processes and procedures in consultation with upper management and the principal investigators to meet unique and changing needs. * Develop and enforce policies and procedures of the animal care and use program. * Establish, define content, and carry out regular husbandry staff management meetings to promote bi-directional communications, address significant issues and priorities and continue in developing a cohesive team building environment. * Promote animal care program operations enhancements to benefit animal welfare and well-being, reducing animal care-based research variables and promoting a high-quality animal care program. * Develop strategies to maximize program efficiencies and reduce operating costs. * Investigate and develop new approaches to enhance the animal care program. * Regularly apprises and seeks advice from upper management on issues requiring remediation where appropriate. * Manage laboratory operations including the budget, ensuring quality control and safety compliance, developing and revising policies and procedures, and ordering supplies. Identify and address issues and deficiencies and implement effective solutions. * Regularly evaluate the veterinary facilities for appropriate conditions and sanitation, infrastructure support equipment including washing, sterilizing and other related systems and evaluate housing systems to assure optimal performance and function. * Identify new cost-effective sources for supplies, services and materials and maintain appropriate inventory levels as an assurance of program readiness. * Serve on campus, school and department committees and workgroups as appropriate. * Establish, recommend, lead, and participate in developing husbandry and research program publications. * Participate in and assist in physical plant renovation and new construction coordination and support. * Participate in developing new and innovative information technology approaches to enhance the animal care and use program. * Foster and support a conducive consultant/client environment, providing business unit and campus representatives with assessment, training, and advisement in research areas. * Manage various aspects of animal facility security, key control, proximity card access. * Perform other duties as assigned. *Education:*Bachelor's degree in Animal Science, Biology, Chemistry or related field of study related to the biomedical research. Master's degree preferred. *Experience: *Six (6) years in program oversight including program planning, budget preparation, and coordination preferably while working with animals in an accredited research laboratory setting. *Supervisory Experience: *Two (2) year of direct supervision and responsibility for training, work coordination, and monitoring the work of others preferably in an AAALACi accredited animal care and use program. *Certification/Licensure: *AALAS Certification preferred, such as ALAT, LAT, LATG, or CMAR. *Other:* Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 undergraduate college credits being equivalent to one year of related experience. In instances where specific education and/or experience is required only directly related education and/or experience may be substituted. *_Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities_* Knowledge of position requirements.
