    The Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) Heavy Equipment Mechanic analyzes malfunctions and repairs, rebuilds, test, and maintains emergency response specialize equipment, such as ambulances, fire trucks, aircraft rescue & fire fighting vehicles. This worker operates and inspects machines or equipment to diagnose defects, dismantles and reassembles equipment, using hoists and hand tools, examines parts for damage or excessive wear, using micrometers and gauges, replaces defective engines and subassemblies, such as transmissions, and tests overhauled equipment to insure operating efficiency. Position requires technological and electrical skills to repair and maintain specialized response vehicles and equipment.

    Responsibilities

    + The EVT performs difficult skilled mechanical work, testing, and repair of the fire equipment and apparatuses. The EVT assist other division and does related work as required.

    + Diagnose mechanical and pumping problems, determines required repair procedure and performs a full range of overhaul, repair and service of Emergency Vehicle Equipment systems. Ensures quality of work and required tools and materials are to be used.

    + Ensures work is complete and conforms to standards and requirements IAW National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards, technical manuals, state and federal Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, and local Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).

    + Emergency Vehicle Technician analyzes malfunctions and performs services on emergency vehicles such as ambulances, fire trucks, ladder trucks, Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting (ARFF) trucks, and other fire equipment as needed.

    + Troubleshoot/Repair/Rebuild fire truck pump systems to include engine and transmission diagnostics, overhaul and repair, fire (water) pump diagnostics, overhaul and repair. Performs after repair return to service and annual Pump Testing as required in accordance with NFPA Standards.

    + Performs diversified electrical work such as troubleshooting electrical problems with the ability to understand electrical schematics fold outs on emergency vehicle apparatuses.

    + Test drive vehicles, and test components and systems, using equipment such as infrared engine analyzers, compression gauges, and computerized diagnostic devices.

    + Follow checklists to ensure all important parts are examined, including belts, hoses, steering systems, spark plugs, brake and fuel systems, wheel bearings, and other potentially troublesome areas.

    + Performs initial, in-process and final inspections of work orders.

    + Assures that equipment and supplies are utilized properly.

    + Performs other duties as assigned by Supervisor or Lead mechanic.

    Qualifications

    Education: Associate degree or Technical School graduate with EVT certification to work Emergency Vehicle Equipment maintenance.

     

    + Experience:Three to five years’ experience, in emergency equipment maintenance at the journeyman level.

    + Certification:

    + EVT F3 Fire Pumps and Accessories is the minimum requirement with F1 through F6 along with A1 through A3 preferred or the ability to obtain preferred certification in a timely manner.

    + ASE T1-T7 that corresponds to EVT certifications is preferred with the ideal certification level being a Level 3 Master Fire Apparatus Technician and a Level 3 Master ARFF Technician.

    + Level III certification per the NFPA and contract

    + CDL is preferred for this position

    + Equipment Directly Used:

    + Diagnostic and test equipment; multi-meters, test set, and special tools, and general hand tools.
