JOB SUMMARY
The School Safety Coordinator is responsible for ensuring the safety, supervision, and proper conduct of children during outdoor play periods. This position plays a critical role in promoting positive interactions, preventing accidents, and resolving minor disputes on the playground. Playground Monitors are expected to uphold and enforce playground rules consistently while maintaining a caring and respectful approach to all children. The role includes active patrolling of assigned zones, pre-playground safety checks, and communication with educational staff regarding incidents or concerns. Candidates must possess strong observational skills, good judgment, and a calm demeanor when managing groups of children. This position contributes to a supportive and structured play environment that prioritizes safety and respect.
MAJOR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
+ Conduct a daily visual inspection of playground equipment and play zones for safety.
+ Confirm zone supervision is present and functional before recess begins.
+ Ensure children remain in designated play areas during recess periods.
+ Supervise child behavior and address minor conflicts between students.
+ Apply and enforce playground rules consistently and fairly across age groups.
+ Redirect unsafe behavior and de-escalate conflicts when needed.
+ Report equipment damage or safety hazards to appropriate personnel immediately.
+ Document significant incidents and submit reports when necessary.
+ Provide brief updates to classroom or teaching staff after each recess period.
+ Assist students with minor injuries and refer to staff when further care is needed.
+ Escort or guide children back to classrooms if they leave assigned areas.
+ Encourage inclusive play and ensure equitable access to shared equipment.
+ Be alert and responsive to signs of distress, conflict, or unsafe behavior.
+ Support a respectful, culturally aware, and nurturing play environment.
+ Follow emergency protocols and assist in evacuations or drills if needed.
+ During non-recess times, support with hallway supervision to ensure safe transitions.
+ Support students in the daily loading and disembarking of the buses.
+ During non-recess times, provide lunch assistance with elementary students in the cafeteria during lunch and for large group activities .
+ Because of the Tribe's commitment to community service and the well-being of its members, each employee may be expected to perform a wide range of office and field duties from time to time. Such duties may or may not be related to their regular responsibilities.
EDUCATION - EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING FOR POSITION
Required: Associates of Arts or Associates of Science Degree or completion of Para Educator requirements
Preferred:
Two (2) years of experience working with children in a structured setting such as a school, daycare, or camp.
SPECIFIC SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITIES REQUIRED FOR POSITION

+ Clear communication with children and adults
+ Basic conflict resolution and de-escalation skills
+ Ability to stay calm under pressure
+ Writing Skills to complete student incident reports
+ Time management during structured recess periods
+ Basic first aid response knowledge
Ability:
+ Maintain physical activity for extended periods
+ Interact positively with children of all ages
+ React quickly in case of emergencies
+ Stay alert in busy, noisy environments
+ Monitor multiple areas simultaneously
+ Respond confidently to unpredictable behavior
Knowledge:
+ Knowledge of general playground safety practices
+ Familiarity with age-appropriate behavioral norms
+ Basic understanding of childhood supervision standards
+ Awareness of first aid and emergency procedures
+ Understanding of boundaries and child protection rules
+ Knowledge of safe and inclusive play behaviors
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This position requires continuous physical activity throughout the workday. The School Safety Coordinator must be able to walk, stand, bend, stoop, and move briskly across outdoor play areas for extended periods of time. The role may require navigating uneven terrain and occasionally responding quickly to urgent situations. The ability to observe from a distance, hear children's voices clearly, and move quickly between zones is essential. School Safety Coordinators must be capable of lifting up to 50 pounds when needed (e.g., small equipment or assisting a child). This position may be subject to varying weather conditions, including sun, rain, or cold. Proper attire and readiness for physical outdoor activity are expected daily.
