The Alternative Sentencing programs give participants the opportunity to repay the community while continuing to work and maintain pro-social ties. Additionally, the programs help the taxpayers of Ada County by reducing jail population and costs. The Alternative Sentencing Supervisor leads this mission by overseeing the staff and programs assigned to the Alternative Sentencing Division. These programs include: Sheriff’s Community Service, Sheriff’s Labor Detail, Community Transition Program, Scheduled Sentence Program, House Arrest, and Out Of County. This position is located within the Court Services Bureau of the Ada County Sheriff's Office.
Distinguishing Features of the Class:
The incumbent performs moderately complex and varied work under general direction. The position is given latitude to exercise discretion and independent judgment to accomplish tasks.

Essential Functions
Employee Supervision:
+ Assigns work, evaluates performance, tracks time and coordinates vacation schedules for a diverse team of Case Managers, Administrative staff and additional staff to support the programs;
+ Supervises a team of personnel whose work spans across a seven-day work week and may require being on call on the weekends for program related issues;
+ Counsels employees regarding programs, complaints, and disciplinary action;
+ Makes recommendations about the hiring, discipline, and termination of staff, agency partners and interns;
+ Conducts and leads staff meeting and interagency partner meetings; and
+ Develops and performs regular Quality Assurance and observation audits of staff and internal files to ensure accuracy of information and correct implementation of processes.
Program Supervision:
+ Oversees high liability clientele in a public facing environment;
+ Maintains programs that utilizes evidence-based practices to mitigate safety risks to the public and foster participant success;
+ Oversees and maintains accuracy of participant risk assessments;
+ Responsible for all program screening and removals based on eligibility requirements, liability concerns, and community safety;
+ Oversees and maintains the financial processes for all programs;
+ Responds to escalated situations and requests from participants, the public, law enforcement partners, and stakeholders; and
+ Fosters relationships with other bureaus to ensure consistent processes with participants.
Additional Functions:
+ Participates in the planning of division and agency goals and objectives;
+ Researches and maintains ongoing awareness of best practices in the field of criminal justice;
+ Ensures related policy and procedure manuals are up to date and being followed;
+ Educates various stakeholders about Alternative Sentencing programs;
+ Reviews reports, ensures that appropriate data measures are being tracked and reported to Alternative Sentencing stakeholders;
+ Assists in developing the annual budget;
+ Researches possible opportunities for grant funding;
+ Develops and maintains effective working relationships with all Ada County Court staff and other stakeholders working in the criminal justice system;
+ Serves as a member of the Court Services Leadership Team; and
+ Performs related functions as required.
Job Requirements
+ Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Social Work, Criminal Justice or other related Social Science field required;
+ Previous experience supervising/leading staff preferred;
+ Experience in conflict resolution and problem solving;
+ Experience in program process and development;
+ Knowledge of legal terminology, rules and laws pertaining to law enforcement and the court system;
+ Knowledge of rehabilitative resources available in the community, Idaho laws and criminal justice procedures;
+ Ability to develop and/or provide coaching regarding work processes to improve overall efficiency and effectiveness;
+ Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, participants, county and state officials, and officials of other entities associated with the Ada County Sheriff’s Office;
+ Ability to balance consistent program;
+ Ability to diffuse angry and/or hostile individuals and situations and to react quickly and calmly in emergency situations;
+ Ability to maintain confidentiality;
+ Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing;
+ Ability to complete all tasks accurately and efficiently with minimal supervision; and
+ Must be able to follow and adhere to the regulations, procedures, and policies of the Sheriff’s Office.
Other Requirements:
+ Employee is required to carry and operate a two-way radio;
+ Must appear before an oral board and successfully complete a polygraph and background investigation;
+ This position requires working a flexible work schedule based upon Alternative Sentencing program needs, which may include occasional evenings and weekends;
+ Must possess and maintain a valid Idaho driver’s license;
+ This position has been designated safety sensitive and therefore the incumbent is subject to random drug testing.
Work Environment & Physical Demands
+ Work is performed primarily in an office environment, in the Community Transition Center, and/or jail; the employee in this class is subject to inside environmental conditions;
+ Position frequently requires a combination of sitting and standing to accomplish tasks and the ability to lift up to 20lbs;
+ Most of the work is performed around offenders and involves an element of personal danger.
