Assistant Research Scientist (PREP0003680)…
- Johns Hopkins University (Gaithersburg, MD)
-
PREP Research Associate
This position is part of the National Institute of Standards (NIST) Professional Research Experience (PREP) program. NIST recognizes that its research staff may wish to collaborate with researchers at academic institutions on specific projects of mutual interest, thus requires that such institutions must be the recipient of a PREP award. The PREP program requires staff from a wide range of backgrounds to work on scientific research in many areas. Employees in this position will perform technical work that underpins the scientific research of the collaboration.
Interactive 3D Visualization to enable Visual Analytics for Measurement Science
There are variety of tools and frameworks available for visual analytics, but very few are capable of providing interactive 3D visualization. Trame does this by leveraging VTK and/or ParaView (as well as integrating other tools such as Vega). Trame is the culmination of decades of work: VTK/ParaView, ParaViewWeb, and vtk.js are just some of the components that trame builds upon, but does so in such a way as to hide the complexity of these underlying systems. Trame is a Python integration framework to easily build web applications with minimal knowledge of web development or technology.
In this project, we will explore measurement science data using information visualization and scientific visualization techniques in an immersive environment. Data correlation between 2D and 3D data in an immersive environment will also be explored using Trame and ParaView. The resulting immersive visualization platform can be used to reconstitute the measurement science data (generated and/or collected) to produce a digital twin of the real world and provide the means to interact with the digital twin, mirroring real world interactions. Various data format support and data analysis techniques will also be added to enable real-time data exploration and analysis of the data in an immersive environment. Users of the digital twin will manipulate their data on the laptop version of the platform to setup an immersive scientific visualization session for either the CAVE TM or Head Mounted Display system.
The work will entail:
Key responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
• Ability to explore measurement science data using information visualization and scientific visualization techniques in an immersive environment.
• Utilizing visual and data analytics tools and techniques.
• Analyzing and manipulating data on the laptop version of a platform to setup an immersive scientific visualization session for either the CAVETM or Head Mounted Display system.
• Experience with software engineering and data science.
• Experience with Python 3, and Machine Learning.
• Experience with 3D Immersive Technology as well as VR application development.
• Must be able to work independently and with other researchers while under the guidance of a mentor.
• Experience with ParaView and Trame is a plus but not required.
Salary: $30-$31 per hour
