    The Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) supports and advances the teaching, learning, and research activities of the University of Washington by providing and coordinating programs and services that foster a safe and healthy campus community.

     

    The Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) is currently seeking a** **_temporary_** **Safety Professional 1 to support the Research & Occupational Safety Section - Biosafety Cabinets/Fume Hood Program.

    The purpose of the Safety Professional 1 (SP1) position includes, but is not limited to, the following:

    Independently perform annual certifications, filter changes, filter tests, airflow tests, decontaminations, and other services for laboratory biosafety cabinets (BSCs) and chemical fume hoods in accordance with national standards and University procedures. The program collectively tests and certifies over 1,000 BSCs and 1,700 fume hoods located on various UW campuses annually. This position is responsible for maintaining an accurate equipment inventory and performing the administrative duties associated with billing for the work and maintaining an approved equipment inventory. This position will also develop and maintain the annual certification schedule, including taking BSCS out of service if they are not certified within 12 months, and working directly with labs to schedule and complete the work. This position is responsible for completing and maintaining BSC records, preparing written reports, reviewing and updating the SOP.

     

    **DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES** Fume Hood Testing and Program Support:

    + Under general supervision, this position is expected to perform testing of chemical fume hoods, including scheduling, arranging access, providing notification, testing, recording results, and tagging out failed equipment. The SP1 will communicate failures to the appropriate parties, including the program manager and laboratory staff. Responsibilities also include notifying the Facilities Services department of fume hood failures, tracking the progress of these requests, conducting follow-up testing once corrections are made, and reporting to fume hood owners when corrections are verified. This position is responsible for completing and maintaining fume hood records using the program database, preparing written reports, and maintaining and calibrating testing equipment. The SP1 will also communicate best practices to fume hood users by directing them to department materials and the appropriate EH&S or Facilities Services subject matter experts.BSC Testing and Program Support:

    + Under general supervision, this position is expected to support the BSC technicians that require physical support when multiple people are needed for repairs and maintenance. In addition, the position will assist with maintenance and inventory of testing equipment.Other Duties as Assigned:

    + Develop strong, positive relationships with laboratories and Facilities through consistent outreach regarding use, maintenance, replacement, decontamination, moving, and repair instructions tailored to individual work environments. Refer any laboratory safety issues noted during BSC and fume hood work to the appropriate EH&S teams. Collaborate with laboratories to provide orientation and training as requested, and to evaluate and manage obsolete or atypical cabinets. Support database and electronic field data collection. **MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS**

    + A Bachelor's Degree with major study in safety program management, safety engineering, biological or physical science, or closely related field; AND two years of professional experience in environmental health and safety programs.

    + A Master's Degree with major study in safety program management, safety engineering, or closely related field may be substituted for the above professional work experience requirement.

    + Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration. **DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS**

    + The ability to regularly exercise independent decision-making, technical expertise and judgment in a field or laboratory setting.

    + Two to three years of relevant work experience (laboratory, instrument/equipment or waste management technician, customer service).

    + Knowledge/ experience with HVAC systems.

    + Good written and verbal communication skills. **ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS**

    + Must be able to lift and carry up to 25 lbs.

    + Must be able to work comfortably on a ladder (up to 5 ft off of the ground)
