    Position Highlights

    **SUMMARY:** The Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner assumes responsibility and accountability for the provision of behavioral healthcare, medical management and education of patients at the clinic. Nurse Practitioners practice under the rules and regulations of the Nurse Practice Act of the state in which they work.

    EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

    Graduate of an NLN accredited school of nursing or equivalent required. Graduate of an accredited Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program required. Master’s degree required.

    CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, and/or REGISTRATIONS:

    An active RN license from the Iowa Board of Nursing is required. Certification as an APRN through the Iowa Board of Nursing with designation specific to the board of practice is required. Federal and State DEA certification is required. Must obtain CPR certification within 3 months of hire date.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    Provides medical services and health education to patients regarding the age specific populations including pediatrics, adolescents, adults and geriatrics. Effectively contributes to the health education of individuals and groups and applies appropriate methods designed to increase each person’s motivation to assume responsibility for their own health care. Assesses, diagnoses and treats patients in the mental health clinic according to medical staff approved protocol and acceptable standards of practice. Performs necessary diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.

     

    + Secures, records, and evaluates the health, psychosocial and developmental history of patients, performs examinations using techniques of observation, inspection, auscultation, palpation and percussion, orders laboratory studies, carries out prescription drug orders under protocols, management of common or chronic illnesses and referrals.

    + Uses the appropriate diagnostic tests in accordance with protocols and procedures approved by the appropriate licensing and administrative authorities.

    + Documents the processes of care delivery.

    + Assists with the design, revision and presentation of protocols.

    + Submits protocols to the state board if required.

     

    Interprets information gathered during the diagnostic process and formulates a pertinent plan of care. Collaborates with clinic and hospital personnel to promote quality care for patients. Assures that appropriate referrals are made for patients. Provides quality care for patient, demonstrates appropriate health, safety, and aseptic practices. Recognizes and reacts appropriately to environmental safety factors related to patient care. Understands, applies, and supports practice policies, procedures, goals and standards. Effectively provides patient instruction related to environment of care and safety standards. Follows at all times procedures, policies and standards as outlined by the mental health clinic. Effectively contributes to the development and attainment of nurse practitioner practice goals. Effectively ensures that QA is compiled, reports are prepared for administrative and regulatory agencies. Practices under the rules and regulations of the Iowa Nurse Practice Act. Collaborates with a physician or psychiatrist as needed. Participates in the Osceola County Mental Health Coalition. Supports mental health school district and provides education to school and community members. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
