    Job Description

    In order to be considered for this position candidate must be serving permanently in the title of Administrative Inspector (Electrical), or must have taken, passed, and be reachable on the open -competitive Administrative Inspector (Electrical) list Exam # 2071.

     

    The Traffic Operations Division oversees over 13,800 signalized intersections, more than 350,000 streetlights, and manages New York City’s Traffic Management Center, Automated Enforcement programs, and Metered Parking Operations.

     

    The Division of Traffic Operations seeks to hire an Administrative Inspector (Electrical) M2 to serve as the Deputy Director of Electrical Inspections, who will report to the Director of Electrical Inspections. The Deputy Director will oversee the borough and section units, which consist of Electrical Inspectors that inspect the work performed by contractors to ensure that they comply with the NYCDOT specifications and standards for installation and maintenance of illuminated traffic control devices, streetlights, and other electrical infrastructure. The Deputy Director will supervise the maintenance and construction of all Traffic Signal and Street Light systems installed in the City, including monitoring surveys of hundreds of intersections and thousands of streetlights. The Deputy Director will monitor contractors installing, modifying, and maintaining traffic signal and street lighting equipment; monitor the inventory of contractors, ensuring that approved materials are used on projects. Assist in preparing change orders detailing modifications and/or substantial changes to existing contracts and projects. The Deputy Director will review the contractors’ progress reports and inspectors’ field reports, assess street conditions, schedule and run periodic meetings with contractors, and establish priorities for inspectors to go out and complete work according to department specifications. Responsible for planning the manpower and equipment usage of contractors in times of emergencies. The Deputy Director will coordinate with Con Edison to verify on-street hardware, Edison service points, phasing, timing, and proposed installations. Monitor the use of City equipment, coordinate and inspect the attachments of authorized users of equipment under the authority of NYCDOT. Assign staff to inspect the installations of holiday and festival lighting attached to City equipment. Prepare reports regarding compliance with department specifications; signs off on all payments upon certifying the completion and acceptance of work performed; prepares correspondence for the signature of superiors. Respond to complaints from civilians, commissioners, elected officials, and other sources by directing staff to perform inspections/investigations. Communicate with other municipalities on performance and/or integration of new technologies. Train newly hired personnel. Attend EBTs on behalf of the Electrical Inspections Unit. Coordinate with other units as necessary and perform other related tasks assigned.

     

    Preference will be given to candidate who possess a motor vehicle driver's license valid in the state of New York, which may be required for certain assignments. This license must be maintained for the duration of the assignment.

    ADMINISTRATIVE INSPECTOR (ELEC - 10077

    Qualifications

    1. Seven years of full-time satisfactory experience as an electrician, designer, or inspector of electrical installations for light, heat and/or power distribution, traffic signals, fire alarm detection or communication systems, at least eighteen months of which must have been in a managerial, administrative or supervisory capacity; or

    2. Five years of experience as described in “1” above, at least 18 months of which must have been in a managerial, administrative or supervisory capacity and one of the following: (a) 60 credits towards a degree in electrical engineering or electrical engineering technology from an accredited college or university; or (b) Two years of full-time training in an acceptable electrical program in an accredited technical school; or

    3. Completion of an apprentice program, at least three years in length, in the electrical trade or electrical inspection, and either: (a) four years of experience as described in “1” above, or (b) two years of experience as described in “1” above plus either 60 credits or two years of education as described in”2” above.

    4. A license as a professional engineer or registered architect issued pursuant to the New York State Education Law, and at least two years of experience as described in “1” above, at least 18 months of which must have been in a managerial, administrative or supervisory capacity; or

    5. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to “1,” “2,” or “3” above. All candidates must have at least two years of experience as described in “1” above, at least 18 months of which must have been in a managerial, administrative or supervisory capacity.
