    Position Summary:

    Assists the Unit Director with the responsibility and accountability for the management of the unit. Emphasis on independent decision-making related to the nursing process. Demonstrates the ability to provide consistent direction for all nursing personnel in planning, organizing, implementing and evaluating nursing activities.

    Qualifications:

    A. Education:

     

    Hold a current Texas permit or license as a Registered Nurse. BSN preferred.

     

    B. Training and Experience:

    1. BLS Certification through the American Heart Association is required upon transfer to the department.

    2. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) through the American Heart Association within 6 months of hire or transfer to department.

    3. 18 months full-time experience as an R.N. preferred. If less than 18 months' experience, administrative approval must be obtained.

    4. Demonstrated leadership skills.

    5. Hospital and Nursing orientation within 3 months of hire.

    6. Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) within 6 months of hire.

    7. An Introduction to Fetal Heart Monitoring through the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN) upon hire or transfer to department. (This requirement can be waived with proof or certification of an intermediate or advanced fetal heart monitoring course taken in the past two years through AWHONN).

    8. L&D competencies within 3 months of hire:

    • Fetal monitoring

    • Care of the ante partum patient

    • Intra-partum care of patients

    • Care of the surgical OB patient

    • Care of the post-partum patient

    • QS Computerized Charting

    • Care of the neonate

    • Care of the Adolescent OB patient

    • Care of the high-risk OB patient

    VI. Unusual Physical Demands and Working Conditions:

    A. Ability to perform:

    1. Heavy lifting

    2. Sustained standing and walking

    3. Work under stress

    4. Varied work hours and shifts.

    B. May encounter exposure to infectious diseases.
