    Job Description

This person will specifically be supporting a large decommissioning project that involves the systematic processes of dismantling and removing IT equipment and infrastructure from current data centers facilities that are in production. This will include secure data destruction of Data Bearing Devices (DBDs), Rack & Cable removal, asset recovery, and site restoration while ensuring regulatory compliance and environmental responsibility. This role is a complex undertaking that requires careful assessment, proper equipment handling, the ability to stay focused and follow specific instructions regarding data center equipment to maximize value recovery through the decommissioning process. Decommissioning can occur for various reasons, such as equipment upgrades, or data center consolidation. The goal is to remove some of the infrastructure inside a data center, not to shut down the entire facility or provide any kind of break/fix or troubleshooting.

    Responsibilities:

Identify Assets to Decommission: Begin by creating a detailed inventory of servers, switches, and other equipment slated for decommissioning.

Keep Clean and Cohesive Records: Documentation is your compass throughout the process. Maintain detailed records of all hardware, software, and data, which will aid in tracking and ensuring compliance.

Back Up Current Data: Before decommissioning, back up all critical data. This ensures that valuable information is not lost during the transition.

Migrate Workloads: Transfer workloads either to new equipment or temporary storage locations

Sanitize Systems: Permanently erase data from decommissioned equipment to prevent unauthorized access and protect sensitive information

Decommission Server and Pack Up Equipment: This step involves shutting down servers, disconnecting networks, and carefully packing equipment for removal or disposal

Audit the Decommission and Send to IT Asset Disposition Specialist: Conduct a comprehensive audit to verify that all steps were executed correctly. Then, collaborate with an IT asset disposition specialist to handle the equipment in an environmentally friendly and compliant manner.

    Additional Tasks will include -

Prepares, stages, sets up, and performs startups and shutdowns (e.g., racks, hard drives, switches) according to specific instructions, checklists, guides, standard protocols, and emails.

Performs post-execution quality checks and verifies that grounding, staging, labeling, and cabling are set up properly according to safety protocols, deployment standards, and planned Network Design Tasks (NDTs). Performs diagnostics and troubleshooting following standard procedures, quickly identifies the cause(s) of issues, and replaces faulty components

Decommissions hardware for simple changes and refreshes (e.g., memory upgrades, OS rebuilds) following standard procedures with minimal guidance

Follows procedures to communicate, report, and escalate incidents to appropriate Datacenter Technician Leads

The main function of a Data Center Technician is to monitor software to process business, scientific, engineering, and other data according to operating instructions.
