    Purpose

     

    Ketchikan Indian Community (KIC) job descriptions are a management tool to help organize duties and provide employees with the employer’s expectations with regard to a specific job classification.     Job Summary

    The primary responsibility of the KIC Tribal Scholars Teacher is to provide supplementary academic support to at-risk Alaska Native middle and high school students, especially in the areas of reading and math. Incumbent instructs tribally-initiated college preparatory course. The KIC Tribal Scholars Teacher develops curricula and collaborates with other program staff while maintaining high standards of collaborations with the school district.

     

    Duties are carried out with considerable independence within specifications outlined in the grant and under the general supervision of the Education & Training Director.

     

    Job Duties & Responsibilities

    INSTRUCTS STUDENTS IN ALL SUBJECTS, ESPECIALLY MATH, READING, AND COLLEGE PREPARATION, BY

    • Planning and designing curriculum for individual, group, or class settings;

    • Modifying plans on the basis of student diagnostic and assessment procedures;

    • Developing and directing activities to stimulate emotional, intellectual, and social growth of children;

    • Teaching mini-courses throughout the school district as assigned by supervisor.

    INFORMS STAFF AND PARENTS OF CURRICULUM BY

    • Preparing and submitting lesson plans;

    • Posting schedules and curriculum outlines.

    CONVEYS INFORMATION TO STUDENTS BY

    • Preparing instructional materials;

    • Utilizing teaching tools such as audio-visual techniques, games. etc.;

    • Providing interactive activities to encourage student participation;

    ASSESSES STUDENT LEARNING BY

    • Preparing, administering, and scoring tests;

    • Reviewing and correcting assignments;

    • Eliciting student questions and responses;

    • Evaluating application of learning to classroom project results.

    MAINTAINS STUDENT LEARNING RESULTS BY

    • Providing instructional feedback;

    • Coaching or counseling students;

    • Planning, monitoring, and appraising learning results.

    HELPS PARENTS BY

    • Providing academic information;

    • Maintaining and sharing records of child’s progress, attendance, and behavior;

    • Addressing parents’ concerns;

    • Answering questions and requests.

    ADDITIONAL DUTIES

    • Encourages consistency of service by maintaining communications with parents and staff;

    • Conserves resources by using equipment and supplies as needed to accomplish educational results;

    • Performs job in accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act;

    • Other related duties as assigned.

    Minimum Qualifications (Education & Experience)

    • Bachelor’s degree in Education.

    • State of Alaska Type-A Teacher Certification.

    • A combination of relevant experience, education, and training may substitute for education and experience requirements on a year-for-year basis.

    • Proof of valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.

    Preferred Qualifications (Education & Experience)

    • Certification in Secondary Math or English.

    • Two (2) years of documented experience working with a Native education-based or results-based program preferred.

    • Experience in community clinic preferred and a strong commitment to multi-disciplinary teamwork.

    Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    • Strong understanding and sensitivity to American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) Tribal culture and lifestyle, working effectively with AI/AN populations.

    • Effective oral and written communication skills with sensitivity to the lifestyles of targeted participants.

    • Skills in operating personal computers using a variety of computer software.

    • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with management, coworkers, and outside contacts.

    • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and comply with all applicable federal and tribal privacy laws and KIC policy (HIPAA, HITECH, etc.).

    • Ability to learn and apply program/agency operating policies and procedures.

    • Ability to manage multiple priorities and tasks concurrently and meet deadlines.

    • Ability to work independently as well as with teams.

    • Skilled in instruction or consultation in a classroom environment;

    • Ability to engage with students;

    • Ability to work in conjunction with school program;

    • Ability to collect data, keep accurate and organized records, and ensure timely preparation of reports;

    • Ability to communicate professionally over the telephone and in person in a positive and clear manner;

    • Maintain maximum flexibility and perform at the highest level as a team player;

    • Ability to utilize maximum degree of professionalism and diplomacy with those who may be experiencing a high degree of stress both mentally and/or physically;

    • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and able to prioritize assignments;

    • Maintain strict confidentiality on tribal and school district operations.
