Family and Community Engagement Intern
Reports To: Assistant Director of Parent and Family Engagement
Compensation: This is an unpaid internship. Interns are not considered employees and will not receive wages, benefits, or offer of future employment. A written agreement outlining the educational nature of the internship will be provided prior to the start of the internship.
Time Commitment:
+ Approximately 15 hours per week (flexible, part-time options may be considered)
+ Internship will span a defined period aligned with academic calendars
+ Interns are expected to participate 2–3 days per week, with scheduling coordinated around coursework
Internship Overview
The Family and Community Engagement Internship is a hands-on learning opportunity for students interested in event planning, community outreach, and nonprofit development. Interns will work alongside the Development and Marketing teams to plan, promote, and execute community-based events that empower individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) and support their families.
Interns will gain real-world experience in nonprofit event coordination, donor engagement, and outreach strategy—while developing their communication, planning, and relationship-building skills. This internship is designed to complement academic learning by offering students exposure to inclusive community-building initiatives aligned with Springbrook’s mission.
Learning Objectives & Responsibilities
Under close supervision, interns will:
+ Participate in Development Team and other department meetings to observe team collaboration and strategy
+ Assist in planning and coordinating logistics for special events and fundraisers
+ Support community-based fundraising activities (e.g., “Spirit Nights at Dave & Buster’s”)
+ Engage in mission-driven initiatives including:
+ Miles for a Mission 5K
+ Unlock the Magic Fundraiser
+ Parent and Family Network Chapter meetings
+ Observe and contribute to family and community engagement strategies
+ Gain insight into donor communication and nonprofit storytelling
All tasks will be structured to ensure educational value and will not replace or displace the work of paid staff.
Qualifications
+ Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program (e.g., Public Administration, Human Services, Marketing, Communications, Event Management, or a related field)
+ Interest in working with and supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities
+ Ability to demonstrate empathy, professionalism, and strong interpersonal skills
+ Comfortable working in a collaborative, mission-driven environment
+ Strong organizational and time management skills; able to manage assignments alongside academic responsibilities
+ Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Outlook; familiarity with basic online research tools
+ Reliable transportation to and from events or meetings (as needed)
+ Must pass all required background checks as determined by position and regulatory compliance.

It is designed to provide the intern with training similar to that which would be given in an educational environment, tied to academic coursework and learning objectives.
