As an Adoptions Assistant at the Animal Rescue League of Iowa, you’ll be a key part of the team that connects people with their new best friend. Whether you’re guiding someone through their first pet adoption or helping a long-time animal lover find the right match, your work helps ensure that every adoption is a positive, compassionate, and educational experience.

This role is perfect for someone with strong customer service skills, a passion for animals, and a desire to support people through meaningful and sometimes emotional decisions.

What You’ll Do

You’ll assist customers throughout the adoption process—from answering questions and facilitating animal interactions to reviewing applications and finalizing adoptions. You’ll work closely with the Adoptions Team Lead and Supervisor to make thoughtful decisions that prioritize the well-being of animals and the people adopting them. You’ll also help support adoption-related events, both onsite and offsite, which includes coordinating volunteers, transporting animals, and engaging with the community. Additional responsibilities include assisting with retail sales, balancing the cash drawer, keeping adoption areas clean and welcoming, and promoting the ARL’s mission and services to all visitors.

What You Bring

You have a high school diploma or GED, and at least two years of customer service experience. Experience with animal handling and event coordination is preferred. You bring a welcoming attitude, strong communication skills, and the ability to guide people through both joyful and challenging moments. You’re confident using Microsoft Office and handling financial transactions. You’re organized, solutions-focused, and ready to represent the ARL with warmth and professionalism. A valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record is required

Working Conditions

This position involves lifting up to 50 lbs and the ability to stand or sit for extended periods. You will be exposed to pet dander, animal waste, and the possibility of scratches or bites. Offsite event participation will require transporting animals and setting up event spaces.
