    Scope of Job

    To provide strategic vision, direction, and leadership for the Writing Center. The director will develop and implement strategic initiatives to advance student writing and learning, provide ongoing development for and supervision of peer writing consultants and staff, design and implement assessment and evaluation of Writing Center initiatives, and manage a budget. The director will also be expected to collaborate with leadership, faculty, and staff across the institution to strengthen the teaching and learning of writing for all students at UTRGV , including working with faculty in Writing Studies to create an institutional model for the ongoing, scaffolded education and support of student writers at UTRGV .

    Description of Duties

    + Determines departmental priorities in collaboration with leadership in Student Success, as well as faculty and leadership of the Colleges/Schools.

    + Develops and implements, with input of Writing Center staff and Student Success leadership, short- and long-range planning for the Writing Center.

    + Researches best practices in selection and implementation of Writing Center initiatives and priorities.

    + Develops, cultivates, and maintains working relationships with leadership, faculty, and staff across the university.

    + Responsible for gathering, analyzing and reporting data for the Writing Center, using that data to inform departmental decision-making, and sharing relevant data with stakeholders.

    + Develops and conducts Writing Center research and assessment projects, including those designed for internal and external assessment needs, as well as evaluation of writing support programs and services.

    + Oversees the design and implementation of professional development programs which provide ongoing education for tutors and professional staff in current research and best practices in writing and writing center studies.

    + Reviews and develops departmental policies that ensure student success and are in line with Student Success and institutional priorities.

    + Responsible for all personnel matters for the department, including recruitment, hiring, evaluation, termination, and performance management issues.

    + Responsible for overall fiscal management of the Writing Center so that assigned resources are efficiently used according to department and Student Success priorities.

    + Oversees the reconciliation of all unit budget accounts.

    + Provides leadership in the development and sustenance of a robust culture of writing on campus

    + Consults with faculty and provides assistance with best practices for teaching writing, including how to design meaningful writing projects to meet disciplinary learning outcomes, how to provide efficient and effective feedback on student writing, and how to make use of peer-led writing supports.

    + Performs other duties as assigned.

    Direct supervision of all assigned staff.

    Required Education

    Master’s degree in Rhetoric & Composition, English, or related area from an accredited university.

    Preferred Education

    Ph. D. (or terminal degree) in Rhetoric & Composition, English, or related area from an accredited university. Graduate coursework in rhetoric and composition, writing program and/or writing center administration.

     

    Licenses/Certifications

     

    None.

    Required Experience

    Five (5) years of experience in teaching writing to university level students and/or working in a writing or tutoring center performing related duties. Up-to-date understanding of rhetoric and composition pedagogy and writing center theories and practices.

    Preferred Experience

    Administrative experience leading a writing program at an institution of higher education. Experience teaching writing or leading some aspect of a writing program in an institution similar to UTRGV .

    Equipment

    Use of standard office equipment. Preferred experience in the use of technologies for online tutoring. Basic statistical and strong report writing skills.

    Working Conditions

    Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. General office environment. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which requires presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment across the Rio Grande Valley.

     

    Other

     

    Demonstrated evidence of competence in interpersonal and collaborative skills for working with students, faculty, staff, college deans, department chairs, and senior administrators is required.
