    General Nature of Work

    • Manages the overall comprehensive Environmental Health program for Decatur County. Provides exceptional customer service and maintains HIPAA standards related to Privacy and Security

    • Manages professional-level and clerical staff

    • Fieldwork may require working in adverse weather conditions

    • Inspects restaurants, home/building sites, septic tanks, tourist accommodations, swimming pools, and body art facilities

    • Reviews applications, prepares permits, and reports

    • Investigates/responds to potential health hazards, animal bites/rabies, and equine disease cases

    • May be assigned to assist in other counties in the district

    • May drive company vehicles (valid driver’s license required)

    • Inspects and Audits assigned facilities/sites for compliance

    • Responds to Public Health Emergencies

    Minimum Qualifications

    Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, which included the completion of 27 semester hours (or 40 quarter hours) in laboratory science (e.g., chemistry, biology, geology, physics, etc.) and two (2) years of experience as a PH Envir Compl Specialist 4 (RCP123) or position equivalent. (Please mail or bring a copy of College Transcript or Diploma to Interview—must have official transcript prior to start date). The ability to stoop, bend, reach, and lift 60 pounds.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Master’s degree in Environmental Health, Public Health, or related field

    • Registered Environmental Health Specialist or Registered Sanitarian by the National Environmental Health Association (NEHA) or the recognized credentialing board of a state or country having equivalent standards as NEHA

    • Previous employment with any state’s Department of Public Health or a County Board of Health

    • Two or more years of supervisory/management experience

    • Technical specialist in on-site wastewater, food service, or other programs

    • Current Certifications:

    o Level II Inspector, Onsite Sewage Management Program

    o Food Service Standardization

    o Certified Food Safety Manager (CFSM)

    o Certified Swimming Pool Operator (CPO)

    A State Merit Application for Employment must be received by this office no later than the deadline . Highlight any experience related to the Preferred Qualifications . This position may require driving company vehicles (Valid driver’s license required) and working some evenings and weekends during special events such as health fairs and responding to disasters. Drug screen, criminal background check, and immunization records may be required. If selected, male applicants between 18 and 26 years of age must present proof of Selective Service Registration.
