International Tax Accountant, Tax Department – Georgetown University
Under the supervision of the Senior Director of Tax, the International Tax Specialist will act as the University’s primary resource for international tax matters related to University activities abroad and the tax treatment of non-US persons performing services for the University. The International Tax Specialist role will be integral to the Tax Department’s compliance activities, focusing on maintenance of the University’s non-US person tax database, providing tax support for the extensive non-US employee, student, and supplier population, managing international tax compliance, and conducting tax research related to the University’s international activities. Using the Glacier non-US tax software, the International Tax Specialist will maintain the extensive database of non-US tax data in order to reconcile non-US tax ledger accounts and to prepare required IRS tax filings including Forms 1042, 1042-S, 8233, and others. This individual will act as the primary resource for tax withholding, treaty benefit, and immigration status/visa questions related to the University’s non-US population. As the University expands its international presence, this individual will conduct research on issues such as value-added tax, exempt status registration and maintenance, and legal presence, requiring a mindfulness of the ever-changing nature of the international tax landscape.
This is a critical role that supports the University’s ability to fulfil the compliance requirements of both the IRS and foreign jurisdictions. As a part of the Tax Department, this position provides valuable resources and support to the University community and has a direct financial impact on the University’s ability to remain in compliance and to fulfill its exempt mission.
Primary Duties:
+ Managing the Glacier non-US persons database; collecting the appropriate visa/immigration documentation for accurate tax withholding on payments, troubleshooting the Glacier database’s integration with the internal management system (Workday)
+ Annual tax form preparation – 1042, 1042-S, 8233, 926, 8865, 5471
+ Reconciling the non-US tax liability account for bi-weekly non-US tax withholding remittances to the IRS
+ Researching VAT scenarios and other tax issues related to the University’s expanding international presence
+ Reviewing payments to non-US suppliers for tax withholding accuracy
+ Acting as a technical resource for the non-US population by assisting with tax-related inquiries related to treaty benefits, change of immigration status, and tax withholding on payments
+ Providing University-wide support for all non-US tax questions (hiring/contracting overseas, tax withholding on payroll and supplier payments, etc.)
Work Interactions
As a member of the Tax Department within the Office of the Chief Financial Officer, the International Tax Accountant reports to the Senior Director of Tax. The Tax Department focuses on the University’s compliance with IRS, state, and foreign tax regulations by preparing required tax filings, overseeing the tax withholding process on payroll, accounts payable, and student account transactions, and analyzing the tax implications of operational decisions. Some of the tax technical areas the Tax Department oversees include: income tax, sales tax, property tax, value-added tax, payroll tax, and excise tax.
Requirements and Qualifications
Required:
+ Bachelor’s degree in Accounting from an accredited college/university required
+ 3-5 years of public accounting experience in Tax required
+ Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification or CPA candidate required
Preferred:
+ Experience conducting tax research
+ Experience preparing foreign tax filings, including Forms 1042, 1042-S, 8233, 5471, 8865, 926, and VAT- related filings
+ Experience with tax journal entries and account reconciliation
+ Strong organizational and oral/written communication skills
+ Strong Microsoft Excel skills
+ Ability to work independently and in team settings (both remotely and in-person, when necessary)

Pay Range:
The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is:
$47,586.00 - $87,558.13
Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.
