Summary About the Position: Serves as 2nd Mate aboard the Dredge Goetz, leading a deck crew during dredging operations. Ensures safety, equipment maintenance, and effective crew performance during shifts. Supervises daily activities and supports annual overhaul and repair projects. Responsibilities Supervises a deck crew during dredging operations, including placing pontoons and setting swing line anchors for dredge movement. Leads repairs and upkeep of deck and pipeline equipment, including welding, painting, and general maintenance. Oversees deck crew during vessel lockage, towing, and unloading of equipment, ensuring safe and efficient operations. Participates in major annual repair activities including diesel engine and marine equipment overhaul. Ensures crew safety through training, inspections, and first aid response; maintains safe and clean work environments. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) 2nd Mate Class I without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to supervise workers placing dredge equipment; plan and/or assign daily crew tasks; maintain dredge and/or pipeline equipment; assist with overhaul of engines and/or marine gear. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (related to mobile equipment operation) Ability to Lead or Supervise Ability to Operate Safely (Non-motor Vehicles) Reliability and Dependability as a Towboat Operator Work Practices (includes keeping things neat, clean, and in order) PHYSICAL EFFORTS: Light to moderate physical effort is required for continuous standing and operating of various controls. Incumbent must have color and depth perception and be able to see in low visibility conditions in order to navigate a dredge. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed in the pilot house, on deck and in other locations of the vessel. Occasionally goes outside in all kinds of weather to attend to duties, being exposed to the elements and subject to slipping on wet decks. Danger of drowning is present in case of accident. There is danger from traffic hazards, particularly in foggy weather and at night. Education Additional Information Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration. You will be required to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship. One year trial/probationary period may be required. Appointment is subject to the completion of a favorable suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a background investigation. Direct deposit of pay is required. This is a(n) Transportation and Distribution Management Career Field position. Selection is subject to restrictions resulting from Department of Defense referral system for displaced employees.
