Job Description:
Creatively develops, improves, implements, and coordinates a comprehensive laboratory safety program for the University to enhance institutional safety objectives. Proactively establishes and executes detailed operational plans to promote a strong safety culture and ensures compliance with all applicable regulations, guidelines, policies, and directives. Coaches, mentors and develops EH&S professionals to achieve department goals. Manages and oversees the laboratory inspection program and associated tasks.
Fosters relationships with faculty, students and staff to enable the research community to recognize risks and empower them to maintain a safe work environment. Informs and educates the research community regarding laboratory safety issues; develops comprehensive laboratory safety plans and safety educational/outreach programs for UF’s research laboratories. Serves as principal source of expertise to the University regarding appropriate equipment, facilities, and work practices for protecting laboratory staff.
Coordinates, assesses, and monitors the delivery of laboratory safety education and training for faculty, staff, and students who work in research laboratories. Conducts training programs to educate the university community about laboratory safety.
Monitors research and teaching activities for compliance with appropriate lab safety regulations, policies, procedures, and best practices. Inspects/audits research and teaching facilities for compliance with regulations and guidelines pertaining to laboratory safety and performs duties associated with inspections/audits including operating a UF/State vehicle to and from sites.
Develops and implements emergency response procedures for laboratory incidents; develops criteria for laboratory safety; responds to laboratory incidents as appropriate.
Advises facilities and physical plant staff regarding technical and programmatic issues involving laboratory design and maintenance; assists in reviewing plans for new construction and renovation for compliance with applicable building codes.
Participates in and provides leadership to various internal committees and task forces; actively participates in external meetings and organizations and maintains liaison with professional counterparts in other institutions.
Performs other duties related to research and laboratory safety and clinic safety as assigned.
Work hours - Monday through Friday, 08:00AM to 05:00 PM 40 hours per week
Occasional travel to offsite locations.
Expected to respond to laboratory safety-related emergencies, including at times outside of normal business hours.
Criminal background check required.
PHYSICAL QUALIFICATIONS: Post offer health assessment required
Expected Salary:
Commensurate with education and experience.
Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in safety, Industrial Hygiene, Chemistry or Biology and five (5) years of professional experience.
Valid Florida driver license
Preferred Qualifications:
EDUCATION & TRAINING: Advanced degree in Chemistry, Biology, Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field.
EXPERIENCE: Experience in lab/research safety and direct management of a team.
KNOWLEDGE:
