    Summary These positions may be filled for a six month seasonal period, but can be vary due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding. Anticipated Entry on Duty: early/mid November 2025 - April 2026. Responsibilities Perform heavy physical labor such as clearing brush and fallen logs from trail corridors, digging for long periods of time with an shovel and pick, carrying logs and rolling rocks Construct and maintain trail drainage structures and backcountry bridges Use and maintain a variety of tools and equipment commonly used in Laborer trails duties Use standard safety equipment and follow safety procedures Daycare and School Information: The San Vicente Independent School District (SVISD) and SVISD Early Learning Center (ELC) are in Panther Junction (PJ) and serve those that live and work in Big Bend National Park (the park). SVISD ELC, is a state-accredited daycare facility for children ages 6 months to 4 years or of school age. Daycare services are currently free of charge (subject to change). The SVISD elementary school is a Texas Education Agency, A-rated, elementary school (K-8). SVISD includes a High School (9-12). Sul Ross State University in Alpine, TX (100 miles) has a four-year university offering both in-person and online graduate programs. Area Information: The park encompasses 801,000 acres of the Chihuahuan Desert with more biodiversity than almost any other national park and a boasts a dark sky designation. Elevation in the park varies from 7825' to 1850'. The climate is generally pleasant with hot summers (90-110 degrees F) and mild winters (30-50 degrees F). Recreational opportunities include hiking, bird watching, photography, backcountry camping (backpacking) bicycling and river rafting. The park has a post office, gas stations, camper stores, restaurant, library, gym and lodge. The gateway town of Terlingua has lodging, restaurants, hardware store, 2 small grocery stores and gift stores, churches and a bank. Lajitas has limited shopping, lodging, restaurants, golf course and churches. Alpine, TX (100 miles from PJ) has most necessities including supermarkets, a variety of stores, a regional medical center with emergency room, pharmacies, churches, a movie theater and a university. Requirements Conditions of Employment U.S. Citizenship required. Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males. Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program. Government housing may be available. Accordingly, non-competitive rehire eligibility allows for re-appointment to the same position or another position appropriate for temporary appointment with the same qualification requirements (5 CFR 316.402[b][7]), based on series and grade, anywhere in the major subdivision (NPS). If you have held a temporary seasonal appointment in the past 12 months and have already worked the maximum temporary appointment less than 1040 hours during that period, you are still welcome to apply. However, please be aware that exceeding the limit of 1040 hours in your established service year will result in the loss of your non-competitive rehire eligibility. The limit can be exceeded by working multiple temporary seasonal positions that result in a combined total greater than 1040 hours. The limit also can be exceeded by working a single temporary seasonal appointment that exceeds 1040 hours, unless granted an exception by OPM. Physical Effort: The work performed requires very heavy physical effort. The incumbent routinely lifts, pushes, pulls, and carries items weighing 50 pounds, and up to 150 pounds (or more) with assistance. Work will routinely require walking several miles per day over park trails to and from job sites. Working Conditions: Almost all of the incumbent's work will be outside in all kinds of weather conditions. Work frequently involves the possibility of experiencing exposure to poisonous plants, bruises, muscle strains, cuts and scrapes, sunburn, and insect bites. As a result the employee must follow proper safety procedures and use standard safety equipment such as hard hats, gloves, ear protectors, safety glasses, and steel-toe Much of the time the incumbent will be living in remote back country camps for extended periods of time, cooking over an open fire and sleeping in a tent. The incumbent must be able to live cooperatively in camp with other crew members, practice minimum impact camping and proper food storage for food preservation and protection from wildlife (e.g., bears, etc.), and maintain good personal and camp hygiene
