Purpose of Classification
THIS POSITION IS SCHEDULED TO START ON 10/06/2025
The purpose of this classification is to provide entry-level professional planning support to the Planning and Zoning Division. Responsibilities include assisting with reviewing applications and permits, supporting comprehensive and current planning efforts, conducting research, and providing customer service to applicants and the public.
Essential Functions
The following duties and functions, as outlined herein, are intended to be representative of the type of tasks performed within this classification. They are not listed in any order of importance. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Assists in the interpretation and application of city codes, ordinances, and comprehensive plan policies related to zoning, land use, and development standards.
Reviews basic development and zoning permit applications, verifies completeness, and prepares initial comments under supervision.
Provides support for staff reports by gathering data, preparing exhibits, and assembling relevant attachments.
Responds to inquiries from the public, developers, and other stakeholders regarding planning and zoning processes, application requirements, and general land development information.
Participates in pre-application meetings and supports preparation of meeting materials.
Conducting and/or assist in conducting field inspections and site visits to collect information or verify compliance.
Supports research activities related to comprehensive plan amendments, special studies, and demographic or economic data.
Assists with updates to project files, databases, and electronic agenda management systems.
Prepares basic maps, graphics, and presentation materials as needed.
Attends public meetings, workshops, and community events as assigned; may assist with presentations.
Supports coordination with internal departments and external agencies.
Assists with the special planning projects and programs including Art in Public Places and Historic Preservation.
Prepares and publishes agendas for advisory board meetings including the Art Advisory Board and Historic Resources Preservation Board.
Coordinates with staff to prepare agendas, back-up materials, memos and orders for advisory boards, committees and commission.
Assist in the preparation of agenda items for city commission.
Schedules and coordinates meetings.
Assists with various forms, reports, correspondence, project reports, staff reports, or other documents.
Answers the telephone; provides information, guidance and assistance; takes and relays messages or directs calls to appropriate personnel; returns calls as necessary.
Creates and reviews Departmental documents and forms. Updates Departmental documents as needed and maintains updated documents for City website.
Develop and maintain educational and instructional materials for the public as it pertains to land development regulations.
Accepts, reviews for completeness, and processes requests for site plans, variances, rezoning, abandonments, conditional uses, permits, and other development application types.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in in Public Administration, Urban Planning, Urban Design, Architecture, or Landscape Architecture.
Must possess and maintain a valid Florida driver's license.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Qualifications for education and experience must be met before consideration of the following Preferred Qualifications:
One (1) year of experience that includes planning, customer service, public relations, or administrative work, preferably in a local government organization.

Health Insurance
The City pays the entire premium for an eligible employee. The employee may elect to cover a spouse and/or dependent children by paying the applicable premium for the dependent(s).
Dental Insurance
Premiums for eligible employees are paid by the City. Premiums for any covered dependent are paid by the employee with a contribution by the City.
Vision Care Plan

Life Insurance / Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance
The City provides each eligible employee with term life and accidental death insurance.
Supplemental Life Insurance / Supplemental AD&D Insurance
Employees may purchase supplemental term life insurance on an individual-choice basis with premiums based on age. A matching amount of Accidental Death insurance may also be purchased.
Dependent Life Insurance

City Retirement / Pension Plans
The City has pension plans for general employees, police, and firefighters. Each plan is contributory with both the employee and the City contributing to the program.
Supplemental Plans
Supplemental plans provide direct cash payments regardless of any other coverage you may have, and are designed to help fill in any gaps in a medical plan. The employee pays the premiums for these supplemental plans.
Short and Long Term Disability

Vacation
All full-time employees accrue time toward paid vacation leave. Accrual begins immediately and vacation may be taken after six months of employment.
Holidays
The City observes12 paid holidays throughout the year.
Sick Leave / Family Sick Leave
Full-time employees accrue one day of sick leave per month. An employee may elect to use up to 5 days per year of accrued sick time for illness in his/her immediate family.
