    Description of Work Unit

    The Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands ( CEMML ) is a research, education and service unit within the Warner College of Natural Resources at Colorado State University ( CSU ). CEMML applies the latest and most appropriate science to promote the sustainable management of natural and cultural resources on Department of Defense (DoD) and other public lands. We provide technical support, conduct applied research, and offer career development and learning opportunities to support resource stewardship. We collaborate with our sponsors and within CSU to resolve complex environmental issues, leaving a legacy of science based decisions that sustain our resources for future generations.     The Fort Eustis portion of Joint Base Langley-Eustis is a 7,870-acre United States military installation located on the Virginian Peninsula, in the City of Newport News. Fort Eustis was established in 1918, and has served a number of purposes, including an Army artillery training facility and artillery observation, a prison, and a work camp. Beginning in the World War II era, the primary mission of Fort Eustis has been Army transportation training, research and development, engineering, and operations, including aviation and marine shipping activities. The Fort Eustis Cultural Resources Management Program manages the base’s cultural resources program, which is tasked with identifying, managing, preserving, and documenting all cultural resources that are found on the installation. There are currently 234 identified archaeological sites and several historic buildings on Fort Eustis. Cultural resources of note are the Matthew Jones House built circa 1720, well preserved Civil War earthworks, and archaeological sites over 10,000 years old.     Position Summary

    The Archaeologist I will work closely with CEMML Archaeologist II and JBLE Cultural Resources Manager. The Archaeologist I will also assist with site monitoring and architectural surveys. Additionally, the technician may assist with the annual Tribal Consultation meeting, compile National Register of Historic Places ( NRHP ) documentation and evaluations, and trace land ownership dating to the seventeenth century. This position is a combination of office and field activities, working alongside other technicians/managers and/or independently, as necessary. Solid research, technical writing, and communications skills are required.

     

    Required Job Qualifications

     

    BA or BS Degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, History, or closely related field.

     

    Demonstrates knowledge of archaeology in the Chesapeake region.

     

    At least 1-year of full-time professional work experience in archaeology, including experience in pedestrian archaeological field survey, mapping and recording archaeological sites on official forms, and National Register eligibility test excavations.

     

    Working knowledge of cultural resource applications of Geographic Information Systems ( GIS ) and Global Positioning Systems ( GPS ) technology.

     

    Have a thorough understanding of most standard computer programs, including Microsoft Office suite.

     

    Experience communicating technical information clearly and concisely, with proficiency in technical report writing.

     

    Experience demonstrating strong attention to detail

    Preferred Job Qualifications

    Familiarity with U.S. federal historic preservation laws and regulations that govern cultural resource management, especially familiarity with National Historic Preservation Act and requirements for nominating historic properties to the National Register of Historic Places ( NRHP ).

     

    Demonstrated knowledge of archaeology of Tidewater Virginia

     

    Working knowledge of ArcGIS, ArcPro, and ESRI suite products.

     

    Greater than 1-year of experience in archaeology, including experience in pedestrian archaeological field survey, mapping and recording archaeological sites on official forms, and National Register eligibility test excavations

     

    Masters Degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, History, or closely related field.

     

    Prior experience with cultural resources management on a military base is beneficial.

    Duty/Responsibility

    Works in coordination with CEMML Archaeologist and JBLE Cultural Resources Manager to accomplish the following:

    (a) support all aspects of integrated cultural resources management in compliance with Federal preservation law governing the protection and preservation of historic properties with the least impact on the military mission. The candidate shall capture location information regarding area inventories, shovel test pits, and other relevant data on government provided equipment.

     

    (b) provide small-scale identification surveys of archaeological and architectural resources and limited archaeological site evaluations for National Register of Historic Places eligibility.

     

    •prepare and provide written reports and other correspondence as requested throughout the period of performance.

     

    (d) investigate, report, and consult on late discoveries and inadvertent finds on the installation, and review artifact curation and monitoring as well as visit sites and record data on the condition of archaeological sites in accordance with the Fort Eustis Integrated Cultural Resources Management Plan.

     

    (e) develop and maintain electronic and paper records and files and provide input to maintain Geographic Information System ( GIS ) data related to cultural resources. The candidate shall utilize, maintain existing and create new GIS layer data to prepare project maps to reflect cultural resources operations.
