Description of Work Unit
The School of Music, Theatre, and Dance ( SMTD ) at Colorado State Universityempowers students to create, collaborate, innovate, and inspire. Through teaching, creative artistry, research, advocacy, and service,we elevate arts education. SMTD has 46 tenured and tenure-track faculty as well as 55 contract, continuing and adjunct faculty, and a full time production staff of 10. There are currently over 550 students in SMTD , with 375 undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in residential and online degree programs.
The design areas at Colorado State University focus on supporting undergraduate student design through mentorship which includes design in realized production in music, theatre, and dance, which are also supported by a production manager and shop staffs in each area. Most students in the costume area graduate with a portfolio of realized productions thanks to this student-centered approach, which routinely earns them regional and national design awards.
SMTD is housed in the University Center for the Arts, a nationally recognized state-of the art 350,000 square foot facility, that includes a 550-seat concert hall, a 275-seat organ and chamber music recital hall, a 320-seat thrust theatre, a 100-seat black box theatre, a 200-seat dance theatre, dedicated rehearsal, production and research spaces, along with classrooms, labs and practice rooms.

Position Summary
The Colorado State University School of Music, Theatre, and Dance is seeking a Costume Technician with professional experience in theatre, opera, and/or dance. The Costume Technician works with the Costume Shop Manager and Assistant Costume Shop Manager to execute the needs of productions, currently consisting of three fully produced plays, one opera concert, one fully produced opera, one fully-produced musical, one organ concert, five dance concerts (with limited scenic elements), and other one-off events. CSU productions are designed by faculty and students; willingness to work with and train developing talent is essential. This position provides practical training and supervision for the CSU Music, Theatre and Dance Practicum (TH186/TH286/TH386/TH486, D286) sections. They may help assist with TH161 Stagecraft labs as collaborated with the TH161 instructor. Students enrolled in these courses are seeking Bachelors of the Arts degrees in Theatre (Design and Technology, Performance and Musical Theatre), Music, or Dance. They may also be asked to serve on various committees to help in season planning, recruit and retention of students, or to better the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance.
Required Job Qualifications
+ BA / BFA in Costume Design and/or Technology OR a BA/ BFA in Dance or Theatre with demonstrated experience in costume design/technology.
Preferred Job Qualifications
+ Experience with Tailoring, Millinery and/or Dancewear.
+ Experience in costume crafts and fabrication.
+ Experience working in an education setting.
+ Experience working with Dance Costumes.

+ Supervises costume students and student assistants in all costume areas including, but not limited to workroom, crafts, dyeing, wardrobe, hair and makeup application and costume storage.
+ Assists in recruiting, interviewing, and hiring of work-study students.
+ Has a passion for teaching and training students within the costume shop in a hands-on learning environment.
+ Supervises and assists with the training of the student hair and makeup crew.
+ Oversees the craft and dye area of the costume shop including hair and make-up.
+ Oversee the training of work-study and practicum students in costume crafts, dye, hair, and make-up.
+ Assists in the training and supervision of the costume shop first hand and stitcher work-study and practicum students.

Duty/Responsibility
+ Assists in overseeing the completion of all costume elements for all Music, Theatre, & Dance productions including, but not limited to costumes that are made-to-order, purchased, modified, rented and/or pulled.
+ Oversees and creates, pulls, purchases or alters wigs, hairstyles and facial hair as rendered by student hair and makeup designers.
+ Oversees the build of costume crafts and hair and makeup projects using sketches provided by students and staff costume designers.
+ Assists in the completion of both made-to-order and pulled costumes for the stage using innovation, new approaches and solutions to address complex problems that may arise.
+ Assists in Costume Strike including dry cleaning and rental returns.
+ Oversees strike of Hair and Makeup after productions.
+ Builds custom garments from start to finish, using sketches provided by student and staff costume designers for the School of Music, Theatre, and Dance.
+ Builds costume items and accessories from start to finish Utilizing dyeing, millinery, crafting, hair and makeup, wig building techniques.
+ Determines yardage for fabrics and trims for costume crafts.
+ Creates mock ups in appropriate substitute fabrics.
+ Fits costumes for actors, dancers, and singers.
+ Cuts and stitches custom garments with the aid of student first hands and stitchers.
+ Alters existing costumes.
+ Attends rehearsals, dress rehearsals, design/production meetings, and read-thru’s as needed (may be in the evenings and/or weekends).
+ Helps to maintain costume shop machinery, in conjunction with Costume Shop Manager.
+ Completes and assign tasks on the to-do rack.
+ Maintains proper safety protocols.
+ Oversees the cleanliness of craft, dye, hair, and makeup area.
+ Assists in the cleaning and organizing of the costume shop, storage areas, dressing rooms, and laundry rooms.
+ Make purchases on an institutional P-Card and follow all related financial rules, protocols for submission of receipts via Kuali, and maintain appropriate records for budgeting.
