About the role

As an Engineering Director at Duolingo, you'll have the unique opportunity to shape the future of language learning by leading a talented team of engineers in developing innovative solutions. This role combines strategic thinking, technical skill, and team leadership, requiring you to oversee project management, drive technical direction, and foster a culture of collaboration and growth.

Social Area:

+ You'll be an engineering lead of the newly created Social Area within our user growth organization, focused on solving one of the hardest problems for our learners: staying motivated. Your teams will build new social features and improve existing ones like Leaderboards, Friends Quests, Kudos, and the Feed; grow the in-app social graph (e.g. Follow Suggestions, User Search); and strengthen learner identity (e.g. Profile and Avatars).

+ Supervise teams under the Social Area to help drive strategies and roadmap

+ Develop and manage other managers

+ Balance ambitious 0->1 product innovations, thoughtful iteration on existing features, and engineering excellence work

+ Provide guidance on scalable, high-quality system design and technical decision

You have...

+ Experience developing and leading software engineering teams and setting technical direction

+ Consistent track record managing managers and mentoring technical leaders

+ Extensive experience in rapid-growth, consumer-facing, data-driven companies

+ Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively in ambiguous, fast-paced, and unstructured settings

+ Excellent written and verbal communication skills

We post a multi-level salary range for all of our roles.

This is not inclusive of the rest of our awesome portfolio that includes equity compensation and world-class benefits. Our salary ranges are the same for all US locations. Your recruiter can share more details about the range for a specific level during the hiring process. The actual salary within the range is determined by many factors including but not limited to, skills, experience, education, and internal equity.

Salary Range:

$240,000 — $432,000 USD
