    Job Description

Join the TIMSS & PIRLS International Study Center (ISC) as the Senior Graphic Designer/Graphic Designer and become part of a team of experts redefining the measurement of mathematics, science, and reading achievement through TIMSS and PIRLS, which together represent the worldwide standard for assessment in these core subjects.

Located at Boston College’s Lynch School of Education and Human Development, IEA’s TIMSS & PIRLS (ISC) conducts regular international comparative assessments of student achievement in mathematics and science (TIMSS) and in reading (PIRLS) in more than 60 countries. TIMSS (the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study) and PIRLS (the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study) together comprise the core cycle of studies for IEA – the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement. Headquartered in Amsterdam and with a major data processing and research center in Hamburg, IEA has been conducting international comparative studies of student achievement since 1959.

TIMSS and PIRLS enable participating countries to make evidence-based decisions for improving educational policy.

The TIMSS & PIRLS (ISC) is seeking a skilled Graphic Designer/Illustrator with expertise in Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop) to create publications, infographics, and illustrations.

Responsibilities include designing print and digital publications using Adobe InDesign, creating illustrations with Adobe Illustrator, and creating or editing images with Adobe Photoshop. The role involves collaborating with teams, translating ideas into visuals, and ensuring content aligns with brand objectives. The designer will also prepare files for print and the Web and ensure adherence to brand guidelines.

Reporting to the Director of Graphic Design and Publications, the candidate will work directly with researchers, assessment developers, reporting staff, and the front-end web developer in the design department, as well as project partners such as the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) and external vendors.

Required qualifications include proficiency in Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop, a strong portfolio, understanding of design principles and theory, strong visual storytelling skills, creativity, strong communication and collaboration skills, and the ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines. Experience with print and digital media is also required. A degree in graphic design or a related field is preferred, but proven experience and a strong portfolio are also considered.

Skills and responsibilities associated with this role:

    Adobe Suite Proficiency:

+ InDesign: Expertise in layout design for publications: reports, brochures, and books.

+ Illustrator: Skilled in creating vector graphics, icons, and illustrations that can be scaled without losing quality.

+ Photoshop: Adept at image manipulation, retouching, color correction, and preparing images for both print and digital use.

+ Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

Publication Creation: Includes designing layouts, incorporating text (managing footnotes, references, and links), infographics, and images — ensuring the final product is suitable for digital distribution or print.

Illustration: Strong drawing and design skills, a portfolio showcasing illustration work, creativity, attention to detail, and the ability to interpret researchers' and authors’ needs and revise work based on feedback are also crucial for this position.

    A plus if you have:

+ Ability to animate graphics and infographics

    + Experience with UI/UX Design

+ Creating images utilizing AI Tools

+ Basic Coding Skills— HTML/CSS, possible JavaScript

    Full-time Equivalent Hiring Range:

    Senior Graphic Designer - $65,650 - $81,950 (5+ years related experience)

    Graphic Designer - $59,400 - $74,250 (1-5 years related experience).

    Salary commensurate with relative experience.

    Requirements

+ Exceptional knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office.

+ Strong drawing and design skills.

+ Excellent communication skills and the ability to understand and collaborate on ideas.

+ An extremely high attention to detail.

    + Excellent communication skills.

+ Ability to work in a project-based, collaborative team environment.

+ Ability to meet deadlines in a project-based, collaborative team environment.

+ Excellent analytical and multitasking skills.

+ Bachelor’s degree or at least five years of design and production experience required for a Senior Graphic Designer, 1-5 years of design and production experience for a Graphic Designer — including collaborating with others and implementing production ready solutions under pressure in adherence to aggressive timelines.

+ Candidates should include a URL to a web or PDF portfolio along with a resume.
