As a Senior Environmental Specialist at the BASF Freeport Site, you will lead and support key environmental compliance initiatives, including oversight of the Environmental Management System and the Leak Detection and Repair (LDAR) program. In this role, you will collaborate closely with operations and cross-functional support teams to ensure alignment with corporate policies and compliance with all applicable environmental regulations. You will also assist in the development and delivery of environmental training programs to promote awareness and compliance across the site. This position reports directly to the Environmental Manager.
As a Sr. Environmental Specialist, you create chemistry by...
• Leading the Leak Detection and Repair (LDAR) and Potable Water System compliance programs, ensuring accurate coordination of testing, documentation, and reporting between operations, EHS personnel, and contractors.
• Serving as the site lead for the Environmental Compliance Management System (Dakota), overseeing task tracking, system optimization, and user support to ensure timely and accurate completion of compliance obligations.
• Providing technical and regulatory guidance to site operations on compliance requirements, ensuring adherence to federal, state, local, and corporate environmental standards.
• Preparing and submitting environmental reports and permit applications, including air emissions reports to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), and supporting permitting for new or modified operations.
• Acting as a primary liaison with regulatory agencies and third parties, managing compliance investigations, enforcement actions, and audit responses.
• Supporting and mentoring environmental compliance personnel across production units, delivering training, interpreting regulatory changes, and promoting a strong compliance culture throughout the site.
• Partnering with site personnel across operations, maintenance, and technical teams to identify and implement environmental compliance improvements, supporting incident investigations, and participating in Management of Change (MOC) reviews and corporate audits.
If you...
• Have a bachelor’s degree in environmental science, Engineering, or Associate’s degree with 8+ years of Environmental experience in chemical manufacturing.
• Minimum of 5 years of environmental regulatory and technical experience, preferably in a manufacturing or industrial setting.
• Experience maintaining compliance with TCEQ and EPA programs.
• Working knowledge of environmental compliance software implementation
• Proven ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and follow through on complex tasks with minimal supervision.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to effectively interact with regulatory agencies, internal teams, and external stakeholders.
• Willingness to provide rotational 24 hr. on-call environmental support and up to 5% travel as needed.
Preferred:
• 10+ years of environmental regulatory and technical experience in a chemical manufacturing environment.
• Extensive knowledge and hands-on experience with Leak Detection and Repair (LDAR) requirements and best practices
• Strong analytical skills, including mathematical calculations, and interpretation of environmental data.
• Experience mentoring compliance personnel and delivering regulatory training.
• Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Office Applications
