    Gilbert has an exciting opportunity for a Police Sergeant who is innovative, driven, and passionate providing excellent service to our citizens while offering the opportunity for professional growth in a rewarding and innovative work environment.

    The Essential Duties and Responsibilities of a Police Sergeant include:

    + Supervises staff to include: prioritizing and assigning work; conducting performance evaluations; ensuring staff is trained; ensuring that employees follow policies and procedures; maintaining a safe working environment; and, making hiring, termination, and disciplinary recommendations.

    + Reviews and supervises investigations. Reviews case status, provides case management and staff coverage. Reviews activity reports and monitors progress of investigations.

    + Oversees and assists with law enforcement and Officer duties. Monitors radio transmissions, calls and requests. Maintains law enforcement by providing patrol services. Enforces traffic laws and regulations, gathers information and secures evidence in criminal investigations, interviews suspects and witnesses, performs searches, apprehends and/or arrests violators and provides court testimony.

    + Performs administrative activities in support of department operations. Prepares and reviews reports, documentation and correspondence. Maintains records and files. Conducts meetings, briefings and inspections. Assists in monitoring and preparing budget and in reviewing and developing policies and procedures. Participates in/on hearings, committees, and boards.

    Promotional Exam Process

    1. Candidate Orientation Session: August 19, 2025. Please note that the Candidate Orientation Guide will be emailed to candidates prior to the in-person orientation session. This will allow candidates an opportunity to preview the guide in advance of the session. ( Attendance for Candidate Orientation is optional but recommended )

    2. Sergeant Pathway Course: August 25-27, 2025 (Mandatory)

    3. Written Examination & Live Scenario Evaluation: August 28, 2025 (Mandatory)

    4. Patrol Field Evaluation: September – November , 2025 (Mandatory)

    5. Oral Interview & 360 Feedback Presentation: November 2025 (Mandatory)

    **Th is timeline may be adjusted based on the number of candidates.

     

    No make-up exams will be offered. Eligible candidates must be present on the published testing dates/times in order to compete for promotion.

    This is an internal recruitment. It is open to Gilbert Police sworn/certified personnel who meet all four (4) the criteria listed below.

     

    + Tenure: Candidates must meet one of the following tenure specific criteria:

    + Currently hold the rank of Gilbert police officer with three (3) years of Gilbert Police Officer experience - all three years of service must be attained on or before December 31, 2025; OR

    + Currently hold the rank of Gilbert Police Officer with one (1) year of Gilbert Police Officer experience – one year of Gilbert experience must be attained on or before December 3 1, 2025 , AND have at least two (2) years of certified police officer experience with another law enforcement agency.

    + Education: Associate degree or 60 credit hours equivalency from an accredited college or university on or before December 3 1, 2025 .

    + Candidates who are enrolled in a bachelor’s degree or higher degree program but have not been awarded an associate degree will need to go through the equivalency review process.

    + Questions about equivalency should be directed to HR Business Partner Aura Jakupi. Candidates seeking an equivalency review should be prepared to provide transcripts.

    + Licenses & Certifications: Candidates must meet both of the following licensing and certification related criteria.

    + Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona driver’s license

    + Must possess and maintain a valid Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training (AZPOST) certification as well as certifications required in the Department General Orders

    + Availability to work varying shifts depending on assignment.

     

    This position is FLSA Non-Exempt - eligible for overtime compensation.
