    Job Description:

    90% - EHS Environmental Management Programs

    + Drinking Water Program

    + Coordinate and perform data collection, reporting, sampling, inspections and provide EHS services to campus entities/facilities.

    + Update/revise written campus Water Quality Monitoring Plans and Water Distribution System Security Plan.

    + Serve as a designated water system operator.

    + Participate in regulatory site visits/inspections.

    + Storm Water & Wastewater Program

    + Coordinate and perform data collection, reporting, sampling, inspections and provide EHS services to campus entities/facilities.

    + Create, update & revise written Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans.

    + Review Construction Project Stormwater Permit applications and SWPPP’s.

    + Participate in regulatory site visits/inspections.

    + Air Quality Programs

    + Coordinate and perform data collection, reporting, sampling, inspections and provide EHS services to campus entities/facilities.

    + Create/update/revise/submit air quality permits as appropriate.

    + Create/update/revise/submit air emissions reports as appropriate.

    + Participate in regulatory site visits/inspections.

    + Above/Underground Storage Tanks

    + Coordinate and perform data collection, reporting, sampling, inspections and provide EHS services to campus entities/facilities.

    + Create/update/revise/submit tank registrations/permits as appropriate.

    + Create/revise/update SPCC plans for fuel sites as appropriate.

    + Participate in regulatory site visits/inspections.

    + Environmental Assessment & Remediation Activities

    + Sunflower Remediation Site - participate as a team member and assist with site visits, inspections, sampling events and remediation activities at the University owned low-level radioactive waste closed burial site.

    + Assist with other EHS remediation activities as appropriate.

    + Environmental Impact and Site Assessment - Coordinate and perform data collection, reporting, sampling, inspection and providing EHS services to campus entities/facilities.

    5% - EHS HAZMAT Response Efforts

    + Assist HMEP Programs Manager with EHS Hazmat Response Efforts.

    + Respond to hazmat releases and assist with spill control/cleanup within personal capabilities and limitations of protective equipment available.

     

    5% - Perform other EHS duties as appropriate and assigned.

    Required Qualifications:

    1. Bachelor's degree in a science or engineering related field, or four years of equivalent work experience in this field.

    2. One (1) year experience with Microsoft Operating Systems and Microsoft Office or other standard office software as evidenced by application materials.

    3. Excellent communication skills as evidenced by application materials.

    4. Ability to safely handle filled hazardous materials containers as demonstrated by past experience, certifications and/or training.

    5. Valid driver's license at time of hire and throughout employment.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    1. Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Health, or Environmental Science.

    2. Previous work experience involving environmental compliance & environmental programs.

    3. Previous work experience in a university environment.

    4. Familiarity with applicable Federal and State Regulations as evidenced by application materials

    Position Overview:

    The Environmental Specialist reports to the Hazardous Materials/Environmental Protection (HMEP) Programs Manager of the KU Department of Environment, Health & Safety (KU-EHS). This position has the primary responsibility of coordinating various EHS environmental program efforts and aiding the HMEP Programs Manager in carrying out environmental protection programs/activities.

     

    WORK SCHEDULE: Monday – Friday 8:00am – 5:00pm

     

    WORK LOCATION: Onsite – campus properties & affiliates
