Job Title: Crane Operator

Job Description

We are seeking a skilled Crane Operator who will begin with comprehensive training to learn inventory locations and the intricacies of our warehouse operations. This role involves shadowing a trainer to understand color codes for steel and placement within the warehouse. Candidates will also receive training on crane operation based on previous experience.

Responsibilities

+ Walk for 8-10 hour shifts, covering approximately 8 miles per day in both indoor and outdoor environments.

+ Operate indoor and outdoor cranes, ensuring compliance with safety rules and regulations.

+ Perform housekeeping duties associated with crane operation.

+ Learn to pull beams, load flatbed trailers, and railcars, including rigging and managing inventory.

+ Document all outgoing loads, including filling out shipping reports and bills of lading.

+ Work around flatbed trucks and railcar systems, adhering to safety protocols.

+ Potentially train for positions such as saw or brake operator, forklift operator, steel bending machine operator, or beam saw/cutter.

Essential Skills

+ Experience in heavy industry or construction (1-2 years).

+ Ability to read and interpret a tape measure.

+ Proficiency in learning and retaining information based on color-coded inventory systems.

+ Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs, although most products are lifted by crane.

+ Experience operating equipment safely and effectively in construction or similar settings.

+ Comfort jumping onto and off trailers while rigging steel beams.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

+ Overhead crane experience in heavy industry or military is preferred.

+ Flexibility for training on day shifts for up to two weeks before transitioning to off shifts.

+ Ability to operate independently and safely once training is complete.

Work Environment

The work environment spans both indoor and outdoor settings, with steel stored in a building and two separate yards onsite. Conditions vary with seasons, being very hot in summer and cold in winter. The facility is surrounded by steel beams, providing a construction-like atmosphere. Employees must be comfortable with safety gear, including hard hats, safety glasses, and steel-toed boots with metatarsals. The predominant gravel flooring requires adaptability to uneven surfaces, similar to construction sites.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Petersburg, Virginia.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $20.00/hr.
