    About the PositionThe Building Assistant supports the building and aquatic system operations of SEA Discovery Center, and acts as the on-site custodian for SEA Discovery Center’s public and common areas. Duties will vary depending on the programs and events being planned.

     

    This is an onsite part-time position.

     

    Work schedule is 10 hours split between Tuesdays and Thursdays.

     

    Duties / Responsibilities

     

    (45%) Weekly cleaning of the following;

     

    + 5 public restrooms includes cleaning toilets/urinals, sinks, emptying garbage, wiping down doors, mopping floors and restocking supplies.

    + 1 kitchen

    + Vacuum common area carpeting and sweep/mop common area hallways.

    + Empty trash and recycle from public areas.

    + Vacuum public area carpeting and sweep/mop public hallways.

    + Bi-monthly cleaning of baseboards, blinds, classrooms, theatre and interior stairwells.

     

    (40%) Supports SEA aquarium staff in all building maintenance projects which may require

     

    + Carpentry, painting, fixture installation, repairs and general upkeep.

    + Aquarium tank and life support repairs such as plumbing, waterproofing, system troubleshooting and improvements o Installation of new equipment

     

    (5%) Support Director of Operations with ongoing building maintenance and operations including;

     

    + Attending fire department inspections, working with outside vendors such as HVAC, elevator technicians, electricians etc.

    + Monthly and quarterly building system inspections/checks

    + Furnace, generator and system checks and maintenance

    + Assist with event space set-up and cleaning

    + Manage custodial supply closets and request supply ordering

    (5%) Exterior maintenance:

    + Blow, power wash and de-ice walkways as needed

    + Assist with weeding, shrub pruning and gardening

    + Picking up litter and oversee garbage and recycle bins

     

    (5%) Other duties as assigned

     

    The State HR classification for this position is Maintenance Custodian.

    Required Qualifications

    + Experience in plumbing, electrical, mechanical and carpentry.

    + Proven working skill in maintenance and troubleshooting problems, aquatic systems and associated pumps, filters, generators, automated dosing systems and monitoring equipment.

    + Ability to work with a variety of individuals including volunteers, staff, students, customers and vendors.

    + Must live 30 minutes from facility and be available to respond after hours to emergency if necessary.

    + Ability to problem solve and work in a fast-paced environment with limited resources and instruction.

    + Perform quality work within deadlines with or without direct supervision.

    + Punctual and puts forward a professional appearance.

    + Observe safety requirements and emergency procedures and report immediately any unsafe working conditions or hazards.

    + Must be able to communicate effectively verbally.

    + Clear understanding of and experience with working in a team.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    + Dexterity of hands and fingers.

    + Climbing ladders and working from heights.

    + Standing for extended periods of time.

    + Bending at the waist while cleaning.

    + Kneeling or crouching.

    + Reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally.

    + Lifting heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

    + Exposure to chemicals, fumes and vapors.

    + Working in a cramped or restrictive work chamber.

    + Wearing respirator and rubber protective gear when needed.

    Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment:

    + Ability to work weekend and evenings as required on occasion.

    + Need to live 30 minutes or less to facility.

    Bargaining Unit TemporaryThis position is covered by a Washington Federation of State Employees bargaining union. New employees are eligible for membership under the current collective bargaining agreement at 350 hours of employment.
