    Course Description

    In this course, students are introduced to the basics of Russian pronunciation, reading, writing, and grammar. The course begins with an intensive study of the Russian sound system and orthographic rules (the alphabet and correct spelling). The course structure provides a balanced approach, integrating vocabulary with functionally based grammar explanations. The course is supplemented by video shows and cultural materials.

    Responsibilities*

    Will include but are not limited to:

    + Teaching four, one-hour in-person class meetings per week

    + Preparation for teaching class; create and implement syllabi/teaching plans provided

    + Grading tests, quizzes and homework

    + Holding regular office hours to assist students throughout the course

    + Regular availability over email to assist students with any questions pertaining to the course

    + Meeting regularly with the Director of the Language Program

    + Students who have not previously been a GSI for the College of LSA will be required to attend CRLT GSI Teaching Orientation offered prior to the start of the fall term

    Required Qualifications*

    + Applicants must be currently enrolled as a graduate student in good academic standing at U-M

    + Students whose undergraduate degree is from an institution where the language of instruction is not English must have already taken or be currently enrolled in the English Language Institute's ELI 994.

    + Oral, written, and cultural competence in the Russian language; native or near-native proficiency in Russian and English. Russian proficiency must be at the Advanced Level according to the ACTFL guidelines.

    + Proficiency in language-acquisition methodology and demonstrated effectiveness as a language instructor, preferably support by student evaluations

    + Previous experience as a GSI.

    + Availability to teach during the assigned course time slot

    + Availability to attend the Slavic Language Program orientation on August 21, 2025

    + Availability to begin teaching on August 25, 2025, the first day of classes

    + Experience using Canvas for course management and communication

    + Strong interpersonal skills with a willingness to contribute to a positive and supportive work environment through effective communication and collaboration

    Desired Qualifications*

    + Enrollment in an LSA graduate program

    + Experience teaching undergraduates in the U.S. is highly preferred

    + Relevance of this teaching appointment to candidate's graduate training or career goals

    + Undergraduate degree in Russian Studies if not a native speaker of Russian.

    + Willingness to participate in and assist in organizing program-led co-curricular activities

     

    Modes of Work

     

    Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department.     Decision Making Process

     

    The Director of the Language Program will review all applications and schedule and conduct possible interviews. The decision will be made by the Language Program Director in consultation with the department Chair. The final decision is based on the required qualifications indicated in this posting and the degree to which a candidate meets the desired qualifications. We anticipate an offer will be made by/around August 20.

     

    Selection Process

     

    All GSI appointments are subject to administrative approval. The department reserves the right to cancel the availability of this appointment due to low enrollment or other reasons within the purview of the Chair of the department.
