    The research project, Reducing Knowledge Gaps for Low-Income and Educationally At-Risk Pre-Kindergarteners through Taxonomically Organized Books and Screen Media, is seeking candidates for the part-time position of Early Childhood Literacy Researcher.

     

    The Reducing Knowledge Gaps project is a research project funded by the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) and housed in the Department of Teaching and Learning in the NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development. Under the direction of Dr. Susan Neuman, the intervention promotes children's vocabulary and comprehension skills.

     

    The role of the Early Childhood Literacy Researcher will be to enhance a teacher's ability to read a story effectively to children in either print or video form, and to provide feedback to teachers and research staff throughout the project. The successful candidate will have both content and instructional expertise, particularly in reading, and be able to work effectively in schools. This position does not include supervisory responsibilities. Specific responsibilities include the following:

     

    + Interact with teachers in schools in a way that does not disrupt their practice.

    + Interact with young children to assess their knowledge in vocabulary and comprehension.

    + Keep careful records of assessments and materials and be able to document classroom experiences.

     

    This is a part-time position of 20 hours per week, with an anticipated start date of September 2, 2025. In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the compensation range for the position will be $30-$35 per hour. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the specific grant funding and terms of the research grant when extending an offer.

    Required education:

    + Bachelor's degree in early childhood education or a related field.

    Preferred education:

    + Master's degree or Ph.D. in early childhood education or a related field.

    Required experience:

    + Knowledge of the NYC Reads initiative in schools.

    + Knowledge of effective reading practices and ways to group children effectively.

    Preferred experience:

    + Experience interacting with researchers and teachers in a classroom setting.
