We are revolutionizing the way the world moves for future generations, and we want someone who is ready to move with us.
Who will you be working with?
Wabtec’s KinetiX team is dedicated to the design, delivery, and support of KinetiX inspection technologies products for railroads worldwide. The KinetiX Inspection Technologies suite offers automated proactive monitoring solutions for rolling stock condition, ranging from component-level to full train inspection. These systems utilize advanced sensors, imaging technology, and real-time data processing to detect faults, prevent accidents, and reduce maintenance costs across rail networks.
How will you make a difference?
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Electromechanical Engineer to join our dynamic team focused on developing, deploying, and maintaining KinetiX wayside inspection systems. This role requires unique blend of electrical and mechanical expertise to facilitate the design and implementation of KinetiX wayside inspection systems. This role offers a unique opportunity to work at the forefront of rail technology, integrating mechanical, electrical, and software disciplines to enhance safety and efficiency within the rail transportation industry. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of electromechanical design and a passion for automated inspection solutions
What will your typical day look like?
_Essential Responsibilities:_
+ System Design & Development: Lead or participate in the design, prototyping, and refinement of electromechanical subsystems for wayside inspection. This includes mechanical structures, sensor arrays, actuators, control panels, and integration with electrical and data acquisition components.
+ Prototype & Testing: Assemble and test prototypes, analyze performance data, and refine system parameters to optimize accuracy, speed, and reliability.
+ Maintenance & Troubleshooting: Provide expert-level support for preventive and corrective maintenance, quickly diagnosing issues across mechanical, electrical, and software interfaces to minimize system downtime.
+ Continuous Improvement: Analyze system performance data and user feedback to recommend and implement design improvements, upgrading both hardware and firmware as needed for enhanced reliability and accuracy.
+ Documentation & Compliance: Generate and maintain thorough technical documentation—including system schematics, BOMs (Bills of Materials), user manuals, installation guides, and standard operating procedures—to ensure regulatory compliance and support knowledge transfer.
+ Cross-functional Collaboration: Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including mechanical, electrical, and software engineers, as well as project managers, field service technicians, and end-users, to deliver and support complete solutions.
+ Safety & Quality Assurance: Adhere to and promote rigorous safety and quality standards in all aspects of design, installation, and maintenance. Support internal audits and participate in external inspections as needed.
+ Research & Innovation: Stay abreast of advances in sensors, automation, and railway inspection technology, and actively contribute ideas and solutions for next-generation KinetiX systems.
+ Stay current with advances in test automation, vision inspection technology, and quality assurance standards relevant to railway systems.
+ Act as an advocate for quality across the organization, fostering a culture of excellence and accountability
What do we want to know about you?
+ Bachelor’s degree or higher in Electromechanical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related discipline.
+ Proven experience (5+ years preferred) in designing, integrating, and supporting electromechanical or mechatronic systems; railway or industrial automation experience is a strong plus.
+ Solid understanding of mechanical design principles, materials selection, and manufacturing processes (sheet metal, machining, fasteners, enclosures, etc.).
+ Strong background in electrical systems, including wiring, schematics, control panels, and power distribution.
+ Familiarity with sensors and instrumentation—such as cameras, lasers, ultrasonic, infrared, and proximity sensors—and their integration into automated systems.
+ Experience with PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers) and embedded controllers, including programming, troubleshooting, and commissioning.
+ Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, electrical schematics, and wiring diagrams.
+ Proficient in CAD (Computer-Aided Design) software for mechanical and electrical system modeling. Experience with SolidWorks or AutoCAD is highly desirable.
+ Understanding of networking principles, industrial communication protocols (e.g., Modbus, CAN, Ethernet/IP), and remote system monitoring.
+ Excellent problem-solving skills, with a methodical approach to diagnosing and resolving issues spanning multiple engineering domains.
+ Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to create technical documentation and deliver training presentations.
+ Willingness and ability to travel to installation and customer sites, including work in outdoor environments and near active rail lines.
+ Commitment to workplace safety and adherence to industry standards and regulations (e.g., ISO, AAR, FRA).
_Desired Characteristics:_
+ Experience with wayside inspection systems or related railway technologies.
+ Familiarity with image acquisition and processing systems, such as industrial cameras and lighting for machine vision.
+ Knowledge of predictive maintenance methodologies and condition-based monitoring.
+ Exposure to cloud-based data storage and analytics platforms for remote system monitoring and reporting.
+ Hands-on experience with rapid prototyping, 3D printing, and hardware testing in field environments.
_Key Competencies:_
+ Technical Mastery: Demonstrates deep technical knowledge and practical skills in electromechanical design and troubleshooting.
+ Attention to Detail: Ensures system integrity by being meticulous in design, installation, and maintenance processes.
+ Team Collaboration: Works effectively within cross-functional teams and communicates complex technical information clearly.
+ Adaptability: Thrives in dynamic, field-based settings and rapidly adapts to new technologies and evolving project requirements.
+ Customer Focus: Provides excellent service and support to both internal and external stakeholders, taking ownership of system performance and reliability.
What about the physical demands of the job?
+ Ability to lift and maneuver equipment up to 50 lbs (23 kg) and use standard tools and test equipment.
+ Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions and in proximity to active rail tracks, with appropriate PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) provided.
+ Periodic travel—sometimes on short notice—to customer sites, rail yards, and field installations.
+ Adherence to all company and railway safety policies and protocols.
