VA Careers - Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist: https://youtube.com/embed/I-4ku5UMvWM Total Rewards of a Allied Health Professional The duties of the Advanced Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (MRI) in the Diagnostic & Therapeutic Care Line include but are not limited to: - Ensures that adequate quantities of MRI supplies are available to meet workload demands. Assures that MRI procedure rooms are always kept stocked with necessary supplies with special attention to emergent equipment and supplies. - Responsible for the training of new technologists in MRI, in the performance of procedures specific to that modality and organizational practices of the specific unit. Responsible for the training and direction of support personnel in the MRI department. - Participates in the evaluation of new employees. Responsible for the evaluation and completion of competency checklists and the Performance Appraisal process under the direction of the MRI Supervisor. - Coordinates and maintains research projects that include MRI imaging. Assures proper performance and record keeping for approved research protocols. - Oversees the MRI clinic appointment scheduling determining the maximum number of procedures which can be performed in a designated time frame, to decrease backlog and accommodate emergent examinations utilizing system redesign principles. - Works with the radiologist as a member of the radiographic team. Confers with radiologists to determine requirements of standard imaging procedures. - Responsible for implementation and adherence to all safety practices and departmental policies related to Magnetic Resonance Imaging including screening processes and education of staff both in and out of Radiology.- Holds staff accountable for workload assignments. Reports performance issues, absentees, and tardiness to the MRI Supervisor. Directs any reassignment of technologists necessary because of call ins or increased/decreased workload. - Responsible for the training of new technologists in MRI, in the performance of procedures specific to that modality and organizational practices of the specific unit.- Develops formal orientation, training, and evaluation programs. Recommends, coordinates, and evaluates new or modified procedures/protocols. Instructs technologist on specialized tasks new/modified procedures and policies. - Performs MRI examinations including but not limited to head, neck spine, chest, abdomen, and extremities with and without the use of contrast materials. - Accurately performs all documentation and record keeping related to each examination. This includes register & case edit in VistA and placing progress notes in patient's electronic health record (ELR/CPRS). Completes patient procedure logs and archival of image data on appropriate medium and to PACs. - Performs irregular hour emergency exams on-call, 24 hours per day, coverage. Requires the technologist be available within 60 minutes from receipt of call so that proper and effective emergency care can be given to the patient. - Organizes and completes own assignments in a safe and timely manner, assisting team members as necessary. - Participates in the selection process of new employees. Responsible for the selection of a right candidate by active participation in interview process under the direction of the MRI Supervisor / MRI Section Chief. When setting pay, a higher step rate of the appropriate grade may be determined after consideration of higher or unique qualifications or special needs of the VA (Above Minimum Rate of the Grade). Paid Time Off: 37-50 days of annual paid time offer per year (13-26 days of annual leave, 13 days of sick leave, 11 paid Federal holidays per year) Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience. Qualifications Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency: DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d). Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the 2 equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE). Licensure/Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable. Advanced certification indicates that the incumbent can operate independently and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination. In modalities that require advanced certification, to support their continued development, technologists who do not possess an advanced certification may be provided on the job training with oversight from a certified radiologic technologist. Grade Determinations: GS-10: At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level. Lead Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist. The incumbent functions as a lead DRT for a group of DRTs at the GS-9 level and below. The incumbent provides a full range of general radiologic imaging exams, has a broad knowledge of the different modalities within the diagnostic radiologic area, and is accountable to the next higher-level supervisor. The candidate must demonstrate all of the following technical KSAs: Ability to provide feedback to supervisor on technical aspects of work. Ability to resolve informal employee complaints. Ability to monitor and report on the status and progress of work and make adjustments to accomplish the workload in accordance with established procedures. Ability to perform general and specialized diagnostic radiologic procedures in advanced levels of complex treatment situations. Work Environment: Work is performed in an office/clinic setting with minimal risks that requires normal safety precautions; the area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. However, the work environment requires someone with the ability to handle several tasks at once in sometimes stressful situations.
