The University of Maine at Presque Isle is seeking a full-time Graphic Designer.
The Marketing and Communications Office at the University of Maine at Presque Isle (UMPI) is seeking a creative, collaborative, entry-level Graphic Designer to support visual communications across campus. This is an exciting hands-on opportunity to contribute meaningfully to a wide variety of design projects—from digital and print materials to branding assets and campus signage—within a welcoming, mission-driven environment.
UMPI is a small, student-focused public university in northern Maine, known for its commitment to innovation, access, and personalized education. Our close-knit campus culture values creativity, problem solving, and working with offices across campus to tell our story clearly and authentically. As part of the Marketing and Communications team, you’ll work closely with the Director of Creative Services and gain direct experience in both the creative process and strategic communications. This position is primarily in-person, though a hybrid position may be considered for a candidate with the right combination of education and experience. Work priorities may shift from day to day based on the needs of the institution and requests from outside the University.

The salary range for this position is $43,951- $45,000 based on education and experience. The university will take into consideration the salary of current UMS employees for transfer/promotion depending on skills and experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
+ Under the direction of the Director of Creative Services, design visual content for print and digital platforms including brochures, flyers, social media graphics, templates, and signage.
+ Assist in the creation and development of marketing campaigns and branded collateral for offices, programs, and university initiatives.
+ Edit and revise existing materials to reflect updated content, photography, and evolving brand priorities.
+ Ensure brand consistency across all design projects by applying and supporting UMPI’s visual identity and design standards.
+ Support the development of promotional materials such as T-shirts, swag items, and project-specific illustrations or icons.
+ Assist with basic photo editing and preparation of print-ready and web-optimized files, ensuring clarity, accessibility, and usability.
+ Organize and maintain design files, photos, and assets—naming, tagging, and filing for internal and external use.
+ Work with the Director of Creative Services to manage vendor communications, timelines, and coordination with campus offices.
+ Perform other reasonably related duties as assigned.
Requirements:
+ Bachelor’s degree or certificate in graphic design, visual communication, or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
+ Demonstrated design experience through coursework, internships, freelance, volunteer, personal projects, or previous employment (portfolio required).
+ Knowledge and Skills:
+ Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite; InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop, in particular.
+ Basic understanding of branding, layout, and typographic principles for both print and digital formats.
+ Ability to manage multiple projects, meet deadlines, and adapt to changing project priorities in a collaborative environment.
+ Strong attention to detail, organization, and consistency across multiple formats.
+ Effective interpersonal written and verbal communication skills.
+ Experience managing files, folders, and collaborative workflow processes.
+ Working knowledge of platforms such as Canva, Microsoft Office, and Google Workspace.
+ Certifications: None required; Adobe certifications are a plus
Preferred Qualifications:
+ Experience working for a design studio or publisher, or as part of an in-house design team
+ Familiarity with branding and implementing brand standards
+ Experience in both digital and print-based graphic design
+ Skills in hand-drawn or digital illustration
+ Basic working knowledge of digital photography, lighting, and photo editing
+ Familiarity with videography and/or related editing skills
+ Interest or experience in higher education communications
