    Position functions as a Level 3 Transportation Worker in the Traffic Services Unit of Division 13 and will report to the Buncombe County Traffic Services Office. This position will be required to communicate using various radio systems, as well as possibly maintaining signs, signposts, and hardware inventories, serving on a sign, long-line paint, or thermoplastic special pavement marking crew. Employee operates and maintains a variety of small hand and power tools; serves as a sign erector; hauls paint supplies and flags traffic. Employees at this level may train and operate equipment associated with the Advanced TW level. Position may be responsible for 24/7 after-hours response for "Stop/Yield" sign re-installations, emergency situations, incident management detours, and inclement weather within their assigned area.

     

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

    Management prefers applicants that demonstrate the following:

    + Experience in the installation of traffic control such as detours and lane closures.

    + Experience in the operation of at least one of the following: air compressor, forklift, dump truck, vibrator roller compactor, front end loader, backhoe, tractor trailer, truck mounted crane, lattice crane, rubber tire excavator, tractor with attachment, auger or track excavator, asphalt distributor, asphalt tanker, chip spreader, crawler tractor, motor grader, scraper, track loader, widening machine, asphalt paving machine, track excavator, computer controlled pesticide applicator, paint machine, Incident Management Assistance Patrol (IMAP) Vehicle or tug boat.

    + Experience working on a Pavement Marker/Delineator crew or a Special Marking Crew.

    + Experience in the installation of roadway signs.

     

    Additional Expectations: Position performs manual labor tasks for extended periods of time in extreme temperatures and uneven terrain. Work includes operating assigned equipment effectively. The employee in this position will keep detailed daily records of work accomplished, have the ability to lift 50 lbs. Steel-toed safety shoes are needed for this position.

     

    The selected candidate must be able to legally operate Class A CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions and have a Tanker (N) endorsement at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.

     

    Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

    High school or General Educational Development diploma and five years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

     

    Necessary Special Requirements Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
